Psa levels changing

Two years ago I underwent a radical cystectomy, which included the removal of my prostate.  It transpires that I also had incidental prostate cancer. My scans have been clear for 2 years and I am under 2 London Hospitals. I have never asked about psa levels as my consultants have always said my bloods are fine. However, one of my Consultants mentioned that my PSA level had increased from .001 to .002, but was nothing to be concerned about and he would see me in 6 months. He was quite casual and I had never seen him before.

I know the levels are very low, but is this common, as I know that despite having my prostate removed the body still produces PSA  and therefore, levels can fluctuate. I am quite a nervous person and would appreciate a response.

  • Hi Billygoat , my appolagies for feeling selfish with the questions. My Gleason was 7 . 4+3 . Got confused when I went for radiotherapy and told T3 . My report said T2 Mo No . Which I presumed was contained . After consultation it was T2. I was diagnosed Feb 2012. Psa 6 and then continued to rise. Jan2015 got rushed into hospital , my bowel had burst ( separate issue). Intensive Care 2 weeks . Had a Colostamy bag fitted . Back to work after 4 weeks and had it reversed later that year . I Zamora a fighter so will keep going . Thank you for replying and good luck with the future.

  • Cheers, I am interested in joining a local prostate support group. I live in York , do you have any advise ?

  • There are two national prostate cancer charities, both doing fine work and both with web sites.

There's Prostate Cancer UK and Tackle Prostate Cancer.   If I recall correctly, Prostate Cancer UK also runs an online forum.  Tackle Prostate Cancer is building up a network of local support groups.  My own group is affiliated to them.  You can find a list of support groups here.  Just put your postcode in the search box and there should be a group near you.

  • Hi

I was on hormone therapy for two years and it together with the radiotherapy brought my psa down fron 70 to 0.01. Yes like Billygoat, I had the hot flushes and weight gain but it was a small price to pay

Hope you too get a good result, Brian
