Radiotherapy for Throat Cancer

Hello all,

I have posted my little story on introduce yourself and basically I have been diagnosed with Stage 1 Throat cancer.

The prognosis is hopeful and I remain cheerful and positive. Its taken a while for the actual treatment to start so glad to get on with it at last.

I started my first day of radiotherpy today and have 29 more treatments to go over 6 week period.
I have made a little computer programme that logs my side effects and summarises episodes of each heading and I plan on keeping a daily log of how things went/ how I feel ( good and bad ) and map out my journey. I find it therapuetic.

I will share periodically in the hope that even if it helps one person as well as myself  it will be worthwhile.

So day 1 was fine and I dont really feel any difference or notice anything.
One small point is that the mask made was slightly harder than when it was first made as it has set little harder over the weeks and was a little more moveable on the day made.
Took about 10 mins for actual radiotherpay treatment itself.
Drove home fine.

Meet with advanced practioner nurse every Thurs to discuss progress.
Aware might be a little different along the way but all good after day 1.

kind regards

Ian

  • Hi Hazel

okayies much love and luck dust for Monday and will keep fingures crossed for you.

Im sure all ok and we all remain positive around all this huh.

I think you have done amazingly well, espacially with your exercises and its been really good having you in front of me as ive managed (and others) to pick up quite a few tips and suggestions from you.

Just need to start listening re the walking !

Sounds like your energy levels getting there as well as more and more food intake so thats all good.

Ive had a mental 4/6 weeks recovery period with retail and admit I have been a little OTT but hey ho I'll calm down but I admit i did enjoy the focus of retail therapy. As for your shopping trip - go for it gorl. as you say life for living so you desrve a wee treat.

Keep up your positive vibes and I'll hear how you get on re Monday

    kind regards

  • Hi Laura

So glad youre nearly ready to get underway as I know although the preparation is so important you just want to get started. Paul used manuka +25 medicinal honey from the health food shop . He had 3 teaspoons during the day and he swished it around his mouth and then swallowed it . He took for as long as he coukd but once the nausea set in even though he coukdnt taste it anymore the smell put him off. He also was advised to have the flu jab before starting which he had.

Paul was fairly well for the first couple of weeks - infact the steroids they give with the chemo which he had on a monday kept him going for a couple of days. However once they stopped on the thursday he had a massive energy crash abd woukd sleep most of Saturday and Sunday.

I woukd suggest start getting him used to having something via the RIG - just some water as its easier to use when uou really need it then. We looked upon it as its there so lets use it especially when it took so long to get even 100mls of water plus tablets down.

Hope all goes well on Monday and if there’s anything you want to ask then go ahead.

    best wishes

    Emma xx

sorry just a little side issue

Your going to spain for a few weeks. How does that work re insurance? esp since youve not had all results yet?

Do you get insurance but without cover for cancer or does the EU card thing work in Spain if in the unlikely event needed?
Early days for me thinking about abroad again, but just curious re insurance

    kind regards

  • May i add best wishes from me too Hazel, a great help and inspiration to us, telling us warts and all, which is my preference.

  • Julie had just got me the strongest Manuka availbale apparently 525+MGO should be good at £65 a pot, but it was 1p to buy another so that helps.

Leaving in an hour for my last radio session, feeling good :)

  • Hi Ian

we went in October 8 weeks after treatment because we sometimecstsy 8 weeks we gave a yearly policy with 90 day max stay .

i was a travel agent before retiring so am used to the varies of travel so one day say down took the plunge rsng  my insurers  by the time I had said tonsil cancer the tears were flowing !!!! So composed my self theynwoikd keep me insured b ut nit for tonsil cancer or anything to do with cancer which is fine don’t plan getting it again lol !!!plus it’s not like heart trouble  any twinges I woukd be at an airport on my way home before u can say jack Robinson !!

at the moment the EHIC card will cover yiu for emergency treatment in EU countries a big bone of contention is if we leave on a no deal that will will stop on the 29 th March. Spain are as a country concerned how it will affect tourism and Valencia Murcia n adalusia province are hoping to strike separate deals to keep,it going.  What u she be yontemember the EHIC onky covets emergent nit things like repratiattion if u need a private’s plane to get unhime.

my current insurer  wouldn’t cover me when policy expired  so I started the trawl of finding someone who would. .

we have got a joint yearly policy for me n jihn max stays 90 days unlimited trips for £235 for the 2 of us excluding my tonsil cancer so will live with that.  To include tonsil cancer was iver £2000 so took executive decision cheaper to fly me home business class if need be. Want it  more  if I fall off my bike trip over kerb etc etc  hoping I do neither.

Got it via B U P A. Online then rang to explain re cancer it’s surprising how the c word elicits a soft voice. Lol. .

hope it makes sense if u only want a normal 2/3 week cover u shouldn’t pay much more than u would have before

    hx

    thanks for best wishes

  • Hi Dave go for it !  Was using it several times a day a teaspoon at a time xx

How was the last session did you bring the mask and ring the bell ?

rememver slowly next week tortoise and hare scenario

    best wishes to Julie

  • Hi TFS

many thanks ,I took the decision that sugar coating it was no good to anyone . Positive mental attitude wins every time , plus forewarned is forearmed .

    Hiw are yiu feeling ?

  • Hi Laura

do as hospital says like I said I started in summer so flu jabs weren’t being offered can see the sense before treatment n chemotherapy starts. .

i took it bybteaspoon  firstbrhing in a morn8ng mynappointements tended  to be early an i took view getbit iver with n chill for rest of day . Then lunchtime and later in night before bed as treatment progressed I probably had a bit more as looked upon it as calories which were must needed. People did buy me ordinary honey but it was far too harsh for my delicate little mouth !

one tip Laura. curaprox toothbrushes Amazon if I haven’t told u already they  are a lifesaver as your mouth n teeth need so much care but the finest bany tooyhbrush  is too harsh  yhinkn£8 for 3 n no not on commission.

Another food tip mouth exercise meet Mick to start them early I found that I can open my mouth as wide as pre treatment whichnin long term is important as your jaws and  tensons can stiffen during and after treatment then eating becomes problematic.I just worked it into my tablet routine .until it became 2 nd nature still doing them when we are in car ok get funny looks but don’t care !

good luck Andy thank yiu form kind wishes

  • Hi Laura

dont pay for it your dentist should prescribe it ,I get 4 tubes a time oif duraphat , although part way through  treatment it became too stongbsonfeverted to mildest sensodyne toothpaste as mouth was regenerating after treatment it was a good few weeks before I could use it. But now am on it for life ,also get dr  or dent tist to prescribe  bioxtra mouth wash which has no alcohols and is the mildest I’ve found ans believe me I’ve tried them all !!!!!. You have to ask for everything as it’s rare that you get things automatically but persevere and you will getbthere  presume you’ve already got the 5 year exemption certificate for prescription s .
