Radiotherapy for Throat Cancer

Hello all,

I have posted my little story on introduce yourself and basically I have been diagnosed with Stage 1 Throat cancer.

The prognosis is hopeful and I remain cheerful and positive. Its taken a while for the actual treatment to start so glad to get on with it at last.

I started my first day of radiotherpy today and have 29 more treatments to go over 6 week period.
I have made a little computer programme that logs my side effects and summarises episodes of each heading and I plan on keeping a daily log of how things went/ how I feel ( good and bad ) and map out my journey. I find it therapuetic.

I will share periodically in the hope that even if it helps one person as well as myself  it will be worthwhile.

So day 1 was fine and I dont really feel any difference or notice anything.
One small point is that the mask made was slightly harder than when it was first made as it has set little harder over the weeks and was a little more moveable on the day made.
Took about 10 mins for actual radiotherpay treatment itself.
Drove home fine.

Meet with advanced practioner nurse every Thurs to discuss progress.
Aware might be a little different along the way but all good after day 1.

kind regards

Ian

  • Hi its been a while since I looked in I hope everyone is still doing well, there was one question that the oncologist and consultants didnt give me a proper answer to and that was how the HPV virus can lie dormant in us, Iv just read completely by chance that the virus can lie dormant in us for decades before mutating, just thought it might be worth mentioning as some might find it useful.

Hi Dave glad you are OK. My oncologist told me little HPV info   but had a good read about it , yes most carriers don't know it , no symptoms  just unlucky ones like us get the odd rogue cell. It's the research into variants like 16+ that lead the medics into finding how treatable it is..

Having said that I still find myself moaning about what I can't enjoy now due to side effects . And now huge thyroid issue with dreadful symptoms, they mentioned as a long term side effect of radiotherapy  to neck from year 3 on. It was nothing all the way to year 7 for me but hit like a freight train this year. Again find myself moaning . But we KNOW  non hpv isn't always as treatable so I remember that and it shuts me up

  • Hi Dave. I’m great now over 8 years. Am doing much better than Man U u any bright ideas. Does Bruno need to go ? John says give the kids a chance today.

yes HPV can lie down in the system for 40 years plus so many of us would could’ve had it from being teenagers and Just didn’t get rid of it 80 %of the world  population has it  time as the HPV virus, the majority people get rid of it tiny percentage of us  don’t and the tiny percentage of us  turns into either  oral cancel anal  cancel vulvsl or cervical.

yes we’re over in Spain) got a few more weeks and then we’ll be heading back home. I hope everyone is well and yes I’m full of rubbish. I know a lot about not a lot

  • Hi Graham, sorry to hear that you’ve got thyroid issues touch all that I’m okay. My numbers are rising but I’m not getting any major issues with it. I still have a yearly blood test. I hope everyone else is still having that reminder GP you need both your T4 and your TSH level check-in. How’s the everything  in Tenerife for the moment? Are you still busy live music in the resort here a lot of the English bars haven’t had the correct licenses and this year they’ve really been stamped down

  • Hi Hazel glad you are well. My tsh hit 9, sub clinical  no symptoms year 5. Year 7 was getting headaches , put it down to other things . But early this year as  the weather heated up I found I was overheating.  Next I noticed after workouts  extreme heat underarm. Then , no persperation there.  Soon it all got much worse tsh was 19 ! Pills ttok it back to 9 still not feeling right , stronger dose few weeks ago retest soon. Pills helping now. Basically  the thyroid damage stopped me sending a signal to my sweat glands , they " switched off" . Been doing a lot less gigs because of it, loss less anything actually.  But been back past 3 weeks.  This year feels quieter ,  after record years post lockdown.  It had to slow down , madness every month here . We get noise clampdown often too. Usually near election time .........

  • Hi all and glad to see in the main all well....maybe i should but never check anything and havnt for years.....sorry to hear of thyroid issues and hope managed properly...Dont know if related by sometimes have cramp like issues in neck and read that this could be symptomatic of radiotherapy that manifests some years later.....anyhoo, I hope all well and good to see and hear we are still all hear after our journey together all these years ago..

    Kind regards,
    Ian

  • Glad you are thriving Ian, yes the neck stiffness and cramp come long term too. I find after a 2 hr gig head stuck at mucstand height I'm sore next day , and sitting talking even I  the house I turn my chair to face people as sideways facing convos make it worse

Sorry to hear you are having side effects G I feel lucky that Iv come through relatively unscathed from having RT in probably the worst area we can it, Im fully back to normal and was after probably a year, finding it early was the key I think.

    All the best Dave

  • United are in self destruct mode Hazel and wont change until the Glazers are gone, Ratcliffe has been a waste of time in my opinion too.

    Take care X

  • Totally agree the Glaziers are greedy and ratcliffe disappointing. Just settling down to watch the game. Fingers x
