Radiotherapy for Throat Cancer

Hello all,

I have posted my little story on introduce yourself and basically I have been diagnosed with Stage 1 Throat cancer.

The prognosis is hopeful and I remain cheerful and positive. Its taken a while for the actual treatment to start so glad to get on with it at last.

I started my first day of radiotherpy today and have 29 more treatments to go over 6 week period.
I have made a little computer programme that logs my side effects and summarises episodes of each heading and I plan on keeping a daily log of how things went/ how I feel ( good and bad ) and map out my journey. I find it therapuetic.

I will share periodically in the hope that even if it helps one person as well as myself  it will be worthwhile.

So day 1 was fine and I dont really feel any difference or notice anything.
One small point is that the mask made was slightly harder than when it was first made as it has set little harder over the weeks and was a little more moveable on the day made.
Took about 10 mins for actual radiotherpay treatment itself.
Drove home fine.

Meet with advanced practioner nurse every Thurs to discuss progress.
Aware might be a little different along the way but all good after day 1.

kind regards

Ian

  • Yes I agree not having saliva is a small price to pay for the right outcome, amazing what saliva does for us, we taste with it, it protects teeth, helps us chew and aids digestion.

I don’t care who we get in the quarters Hazel I’m just enjoying the Ole revival.

  • Hi Dave agree on both points. Re saliva it’s so difficult to explain to anyone how you feel ,it the most  debilitating thing. I find talking to too many people hurts if that makes sense your mouth is such an integral thing it’s impossible  to describe to someone who isn’t going through it.

But hey got at least 18 months before I know what I will end uo with so slowly slowly it is improving .

bring on Sunday and Arsenal gane

  • Hi Guys,

  • Hi Ian, and all ........week 2 post treatment today. Started to half my painkiller, so far ok but early days. Less mucus now, saliva at 70% but i was lucky not all glands in target area. I am eating better daily, trying tougher foods, managed a fair bit of take away pizza, that and bread do need max sauce/gravy/butter but taste is good. If i get through a week on this dose of drug will drop more, and see where i am. But happy for now, also moved from radiocare cream to aloe vera yesterday, odd itchy bit but feels so much better. Have a great weekend all........ps......Dave (Oscar)........first pint yet?

  • sounding good Graeme and pleased to hear such good positive progress, especially at week 2 post treatment.

    onwards and upwards

  • 8 weeks post treatment for me now I don’t know where the time goes probably because Im busy all the time, no real change here I’m doing pretty well I played in the over 60s league matches yesterday and even scored a few, being a stone lighter has made me a bit quicker and a few of the lads have commented on it, still struggling with a dry mouth though.

TFS the first pint was a few weeks ago and Iv had a few since but I have definitely lost my taste for it and can take or leave it at the moment, still early days though. Well done you sound like you are coping well.

  • Thanks Dave, im keeping my fitness up, but a pint will be a few weeks away yet, just wait and see, when im ready im ready. Kinda thought your reply may be that Dave, i notice taste chages, subtle but there. So will wait a good bit yet.
