Radiotherapy for Throat Cancer

Hello all,

I have posted my little story on introduce yourself and basically I have been diagnosed with Stage 1 Throat cancer.

The prognosis is hopeful and I remain cheerful and positive. Its taken a while for the actual treatment to start so glad to get on with it at last.

I started my first day of radiotherpy today and have 29 more treatments to go over 6 week period.
I have made a little computer programme that logs my side effects and summarises episodes of each heading and I plan on keeping a daily log of how things went/ how I feel ( good and bad ) and map out my journey. I find it therapuetic.

I will share periodically in the hope that even if it helps one person as well as myself  it will be worthwhile.

So day 1 was fine and I dont really feel any difference or notice anything.
One small point is that the mask made was slightly harder than when it was first made as it has set little harder over the weeks and was a little more moveable on the day made.
Took about 10 mins for actual radiotherpay treatment itself.
Drove home fine.

Meet with advanced practioner nurse every Thurs to discuss progress.
Aware might be a little different along the way but all good after day 1.

kind regards

Ian

  • A great day for your thread Ian, your great news  and now Mick improving, onwards folks!

  • Wow all,

Just up from nap to see so many nice wishes.

Thank you all again for your kind wishes and means a lot.
Nice special day for me I guess and was my grandmothers birthday on the 5th so hopefully she has been looking down on me having a hand in this.
Not sure if makes sense but not sure how I feel. I know I should celebrate but im probably still a bit numb by it all and being told cured after all this time.
Anyways, told a few people who are obviously delighted but already had comments like thats great you will be off morphine now and you should now book a holiday. Whoa there !
At the end of the day I'm still recovering , have fatigue and no great appetite yet, so need to dampen down others, including work,  immediate expectations for me to change and be well overnight.

Again thank you all so much and I wish all who are still going through treatment/recovery the very best.
I have met so many nice people on here and this has been a great thread to bring us all together for support and encourangement and long may it continue.
I do intend to be around as would like to still help and be here if needed for others but I think its probably right that I dilute my weekly updates now that I have this news
I will still contribute if anything crops up and will maybe do random general updates as will my blog.
Maybe little focus on me today becasue of news, but now time to focus on others who are still going through treatment/recovery and needing all the help and support we can give.

    Onwards and Upwards to all

  • Hi Ian

too true every word you’ve written , both John and  I were numb by the news it’s a surreal feeling .Plus yes just because  the words have been spoken cancer free it doesn’t mean we can party it’s still a long way off just continue baby steps slowly slowly .

i now like you only update my blog when I’ve something of interest to say ,but just to give everyone out there hope today at lunchtime  battered prawns, fried Camembert ,and a Russian salad went down rather well without the  copious amounts of water that usually go with food.Result !

Will like yiu still be around if anyone has questions or just need to rant as the old adage been there done it bought the t shirt still applies and if I/we can help anyone onkyntoo willing.

enjoy the night and remember onwards and upwards been a pleasure to chat at all times if the day and night

You have been fabulous throughout my treatment and recovery and you were always my goto when I needed advice or information. We have swopped so many convos here and you have helped me more than you will know.
Always kind of looked up to you as you were futher ahead and had the t shirt and always so willing with your time and help. My fav tip is still the Cupranox toothbrush that you gave me.
If I ever wondered about something I always knew I could ask Hazel.

I think your a special person and so inspirational to so many .God bless you.

Enjoy rest of your (latest) vacation

  • Wow Ian! I've just logged on to see if you've posted today and I'm thrilled to bits for you! I'm covered in goose bumps! What fantastic news! Here's hoping that everyone else shares equally good news in the weeks/months to come. Keep posting your updates too!

  • Thank you Louisabel and I have had so many kind comments after posting news.

I do hope that, similar to some others on here who have also posted good news, that many others follow in the coming weeks/months as you say.

As for keeping on posting updates, I think it's probably right that I now start to dilute and only post if something crops up or post the occasional random update. I still have fatigue and no great appetite but really want to focus on helping others now rather than myself.
Will always be around to help anyway I can so please keep posting and updating your hubbys progress and ask away if you feel we can help in anyway.

  • Hi Ian

I am doing a bit of catch up after getting home from hospital yesterday, and just read your good news!

Having a wee chat with a fellow patient, she said to me ,someone is watching over you. Those few wee words lifted my spririts.

I hope to see you posting here for a long time to come. xx

  • Hi Clara

Thank you Clara and I hope you are doing ok. Please keep me posted on your progress chum.

As for someone watching over me, I was so very close to my grandmother and it was her birthday yesterday and Ive been saying shes had a hand in this. Just a weird co incidence.

and I'll definately be posting on here but just not about myself evey week repeating fatigue symptoms, but certainly want to help as many other people as I can.

    take care you

    Ian

  • Did I say that l won't update anymore lol !

Ok as I want to put in my blog I wanted to have a last update, I guess for closure both here and in my blog.

I'm not going to keep repeating fatigue and appetite and that will sort itself in time.

Rationale for my blog and last word for closure is how I feel after receiving news and some of the reaction.
Described to Hazel in PM that it's like being on a roller coaster with so many twists and turns, ups and downs, always having an appoitment , something always to do and continuous monitoring by support team and GP etc. Then it's like you then hit the buffers at the end the end of the ride and then told , that's it get off.
A lot of reaction has obviously been great, but there are many who are also saying today great, back to work/holiday/off meds and I should be absolutely fine now.
Truth is body still recovering and I will be back  at work, back holiday, weekend breaks and health club with  bike and swim once I am good and ready. Simple as.
So just a little flavour as while its great news and I realy hope to hear more here shortly, there may well be others, who like me will still have an ongoing recovery period, even after scan news.

So posted just now as normally post weekly update every Friday then others update so now over to others and I hope to read all of the normal updates each week and keep the thread going for continuous support and help.
I hope this can still be a place for all new/others to come here and not only see the journeys/blogs but also get the similar support and help that we have given each other.

So over and out and onwards and upwards

  • Hi Ian, and all ........week 2 post treatment today. Started to half my painkiller, so far ok but early days. Less mucus now, saliva at 70% but i was lucky not all glands in target area. I am eating better daily, trying tougher foods, managed a fair bit of take away pizza, that and bread do need max sauce/gravy/butter but taste is good. If i get through a week on this dose of drug will drop more, and see where i am. But happy for now, also moved from radiocare cream to aloe vera yesterday, odd itchy bit but feels so much better. Have a great weekend all........ps......Dave (Oscar)........first pint yet?

  • sounding good Graeme and pleased to hear such good positive progress, especially at week 2 post treatment.

    onwards and upwards

  • 8 weeks post treatment for me now I don’t know where the time goes probably because Im busy all the time, no real change here I’m doing pretty well I played in the over 60s league matches yesterday and even scored a few, being a stone lighter has made me a bit quicker and a few of the lads have commented on it, still struggling with a dry mouth though.

TFS the first pint was a few weeks ago and Iv had a few since but I have definitely lost my taste for it and can take or leave it at the moment, still early days though. Well done you sound like you are coping well.

    Dave

  • Thanks Dave, im keeping my fitness up, but a pint will be a few weeks away yet, just wait and see, when im ready im ready. Kinda thought your reply may be that Dave, i notice taste chages, subtle but there. So will wait a good bit yet.

  • Hi everyone

  • Hi Dave and Julie

week 9 how’s it going ? Still good I hope. We are still in Spain have upadtes my blog www.radioactiveraz.wordpress.com with latest photos and write up,if yiu are bored and fancy a look.

Saliva n dry mouth still there but had a few mins where mouthnfelt normal the other day. Shame about Sunday’s results no answe as to why but hope Saturday a good game. Scholes didn’t last long like Hiw he resigned  via text !

hope to hear from you soon

    hazel x

  • Hi Hazel you seem to be doing really well covering plenty of miles and slowly regaining your saliva great news, people just wouldn’t understand how much we rely on saliva until it’s not there. No real change for me at post week 9 I think Iv got a slightly wetter mouth but it’s when I eat that I realise how little saliva I have, it’s early days though so no complaints.

Ole had to lose at some point but it could have gone our way if Lukaku hadn’t missed that easy early chance, we’ve got Barca in CL so as expected the hardest draw possible. Scholesy quitting didn’t surprise me that much I don’t think he’s right for management.

    Dave

  • Hi Dave

thank you I am finding the more exercise I do the better I feel and the better I sleep.totally agree re saliva  yiu just take it for granted and trying to explain to anyone you see their eyes glaze over !

re. Champions  league was always going to be a tough draw so fingers x.

keep in touch and keep doing what you are doing superman
