Radiotherapy for Throat Cancer

Hello all,

I have posted my little story on introduce yourself and basically I have been diagnosed with Stage 1 Throat cancer.

The prognosis is hopeful and I remain cheerful and positive. Its taken a while for the actual treatment to start so glad to get on with it at last.

I started my first day of radiotherpy today and have 29 more treatments to go over 6 week period.
I have made a little computer programme that logs my side effects and summarises episodes of each heading and I plan on keeping a daily log of how things went/ how I feel ( good and bad ) and map out my journey. I find it therapuetic.

I will share periodically in the hope that even if it helps one person as well as myself  it will be worthwhile.

So day 1 was fine and I dont really feel any difference or notice anything.
One small point is that the mask made was slightly harder than when it was first made as it has set little harder over the weeks and was a little more moveable on the day made.
Took about 10 mins for actual radiotherpay treatment itself.
Drove home fine.

Meet with advanced practioner nurse every Thurs to discuss progress.
Aware might be a little different along the way but all good after day 1.

kind regards

Ian

  • Dear Laura,

Thank you for your kind wishes. There is no end to the kindness on chat! I have the highest regard for folks on here.

Thank you and kind regards xx

  • Hello again Ian,

It has pehaps given you an insight as to why I feel so strongly about pain management during/after treatment.

I avoided mentioning husband as I feel this thread is more about fighting this beast of a disease and finding the best roads to recovery.

I have`nt come across anyone still having diagnostic tests right up to day before surgery. I am having lymphoscintigraphy, as ent consultant said to "try" to find the sentinal nodes. This involves 4 injections of a radioactive material around the tumour it should then flow to the sentinal node/s. They can then biospy them. I hope the bed/trolley is comfy as it can take hours :-) I should take comfort in that Glasgow Dept of Neurosciences is very highly regarded as the best in Scotland.

I will keep you posted how it all goes.

    Kind regards x

  • Hi Clara,

    Please do keep me posted.
You are a remarkable woman, selfless, and courageous.Seems such a cruel twist of fate that you also find yourself in this situation. I know what you say re purpose of this thread, but your experiences helps us all understand further the lack of boundries this disease has. and we are also here for you in anyway which way we can to help. Whether it be sharing experienes or just being able to chat to others who undertstand some of the issues.

Lets hope all goes well and as you say it is some comfort being in the hands of such expertise.
    Will hear from you soon.

    kind regards
    Ian x.

  • May i add my support Clara, im sure the people on this site, and indeed this thread of Ian's will be of great use to you. best wishes.

  • This reply was meant for Clara, but i managed to reply to myself . My partner was given Codeine but doesn't want to take it. He's been eating better the last few days, tonight the same amount of food as my girls. I so understand when you said your partner would watch TV but not know what was on!! It's almost impossible to get a straight answer to anything... unless I ask if he wants bread!! (He hates it!)

  • Thanks for your reply!  I totally agree with you, when I had 2 c-sections I never felt any pain because I took the tablets, I'd rather not feel any pain. My partner is very stubborn and isn't even using the aspirin mouth wash prescribed, nor the Codeine. The reason why I said I was impressed was because the dietician said people usually start using strong painkillers from week 2 or 3, whereas he only started feeling the pain in week 5, that's when he started with paracetamol. He dislikes the taste of many foods, water is vile, bread is disgusting etc, but he has eaten more the last 3 days. In fact he said I was very optimistic when I handed him his chicken stew tonight as I served a heaped serving spoon on some rice, but he ate it all and asked for more. I think he's finding the taste and texture a bigger issue than the pain.

  • Oh your poor partner not eating for 6 weeks. I can't imagine the pain he was in
