Radiotherapy for Throat Cancer

Hello all,

I have posted my little story on introduce yourself and basically I have been diagnosed with Stage 1 Throat cancer.

The prognosis is hopeful and I remain cheerful and positive. Its taken a while for the actual treatment to start so glad to get on with it at last.

I started my first day of radiotherpy today and have 29 more treatments to go over 6 week period.
I have made a little computer programme that logs my side effects and summarises episodes of each heading and I plan on keeping a daily log of how things went/ how I feel ( good and bad ) and map out my journey. I find it therapuetic.

I will share periodically in the hope that even if it helps one person as well as myself  it will be worthwhile.

So day 1 was fine and I dont really feel any difference or notice anything.
One small point is that the mask made was slightly harder than when it was first made as it has set little harder over the weeks and was a little more moveable on the day made.
Took about 10 mins for actual radiotherpay treatment itself.
Drove home fine.

Meet with advanced practioner nurse every Thurs to discuss progress.
Aware might be a little different along the way but all good after day 1.

kind regards

Ian

  • Thanks Hazel,  yes we are good, busy again but priority  is family after the long pause  of covid, like all of us. Xx

  • Hi,

Day 24 tomorrow. Fortunately my throat doesn't seem to have got any worse over the last couple of weeks. Still sore but not needing much in way of pain relief. Really suffered post chemo on Wed but feeling a bit better today. Starting to countdown.
Wanted to ask. How long is it typically before soreness starts to dissipate post treatment and also before taste buds start getting back to some sort of normality?

Wishing I could go out for a nice Sunday roast :(

    Thanks.

  • Hi Robert well done on getting to day 24   What you need tk remember the first few weeks if recovery treatment continues to work your body's stvmax input. I finished treatment  31 august and managed a small plate of Christmas lunch so for me nearly 4 month. You'll find most of us find meat difficult fir a good while. I veered towards vegetables for a good while. Taste will slowly return. Our treatment is brutal snd recover is a marathon not a sprint. You'll get there but slowly slowly. We are all different I flew to Spain week 8 many struggle to leave the house   At that stage in recivery. Kerp hydrated I still drink 2 litres of water most days. Nutrition by ehst ever means is vital u was orally dirk king 6 ensures week 3 recovery

  • Hi there. Well done for Day 24, not too much longer to go! We had a countdown in our hallway and it felt really good to tick those days off. I'm really glad to hear that your throat isn't feeling worse.

With eating after treatment - everyone is really different. My partner started to get his taste back gradually over a couple of months. It's not a straight line with recovery, and we had to test different textures each week. We don't eat meat, so can't comment on a roast dinner - but he was able to eat most of a takeaway fish and chips within a month (with a lot of water and 2 tubs of curry sauce!). It's been 5 months post treatment now and he can actually enjoy his food - we go out for meals, he can eat pizza and really hot curry - but his throat is still recovering and can be a little sore/scratchy after.

Good luck and let us know how you are x

  • Hi Hazel- Yes you gave me/us alot of help, support, good tips & a bit of normality, humour & realism in a tough time. I see you still are helping many others the same way-so thank you for that-it really helped me get through & you understood exactly what we went through.
