Radiotherapy for Throat Cancer

Hello all,

I have posted my little story on introduce yourself and basically I have been diagnosed with Stage 1 Throat cancer.

The prognosis is hopeful and I remain cheerful and positive. Its taken a while for the actual treatment to start so glad to get on with it at last.

I started my first day of radiotherpy today and have 29 more treatments to go over 6 week period.
I have made a little computer programme that logs my side effects and summarises episodes of each heading and I plan on keeping a daily log of how things went/ how I feel ( good and bad ) and map out my journey. I find it therapuetic.

I will share periodically in the hope that even if it helps one person as well as myself  it will be worthwhile.

So day 1 was fine and I dont really feel any difference or notice anything.
One small point is that the mask made was slightly harder than when it was first made as it has set little harder over the weeks and was a little more moveable on the day made.
Took about 10 mins for actual radiotherpay treatment itself.
Drove home fine.

Meet with advanced practioner nurse every Thurs to discuss progress.
Aware might be a little different along the way but all good after day 1.

kind regards

Ian

  • Hi Chrissy, I'm having 3 drinks through the tube a day( can't drink them)cornflakes in morning , and two rounds of egg sandwiches nice and easy to get down, for dinner then something small for tea , but the last two weeks my appetite is awful,I have to literally force it down, with virtually no saliva it makes it harder, I'm drinking water nearly all day, I don't have no problems swallowing, I'm seeing consultant the 23rd of this month so I have lots of questions to ask, and my other half will as well, she does Drs notes for a living so she's more clued up, hope your husband gets on ok with camera please keep me informed

  • Goodness that lack of saliva must be horrid for you. Obs we need it to break down food, make a bolus to swallow. So I bet you are literally forcing it down!!

Hope you are able to get some respite soon.
good your "other half" has some insight to medical matters.
Hazel is a great resource for advice and knows of others experiences. Wise woman!

  • Hi try lukewarm tea I used herbal to help food go down . Yea normal n coffee are drying so hence tge herbal chamomile then progressed to peppermint .or even Luke warn water

Also well done on egg sandwiches try poached egg in toast. The cooking  of the bread alters the texture surprisingly so.

but my question is ..... how do I get back to eating I'm currently on supplements and getting fed up with them now I've been trying different things to eat like soups icecream eggs but everything eels like grit and shouldn't be in my mouth does This feeling go or is it something I need to put off with now ?
    thanks Angie x

  • Hi Angie. Well done on completing treatment  it's par for the course. What i did was make sure I had sufficient calories using ensures so I orally had 5 a day which left me free ti manage bits .I started with what I woujd call nursery food poached eggs on well buttered white toast. Try it always have water or lukewarm herbal yea for me. Pots of custard tubs of jelly not healthy but as I had had the calories from ensures ur was about experimenting. Soups i onky had home  made ones as the seasons in tinned or bought ones was too much for me. After about 5 weeks post treatment I was 50/50 on ensures and food. The gritty feeling takes a while to go. I developed the mantra food is fuel it took a while to get any appetite back.  At least 6 months for me.my oncologist said he would cure me but would take a year out of my life and he wasn't wrong. You're doing well. Xx Hazel

  • There you are Angie. I've been thinking of you. Good news that you didn't have to have a NG. So glad you have finished treatment. Well done you x

Hubby is week 9 and still not on food. He has a camera appt tomorrow to check out his throat. Oncology on Monday

His face is starting to swell a bit. Hazel??
