Radiotherapy for Throat Cancer

Hello all,

I have posted my little story on introduce yourself and basically I have been diagnosed with Stage 1 Throat cancer.

The prognosis is hopeful and I remain cheerful and positive. Its taken a while for the actual treatment to start so glad to get on with it at last.

I started my first day of radiotherpy today and have 29 more treatments to go over 6 week period.
I have made a little computer programme that logs my side effects and summarises episodes of each heading and I plan on keeping a daily log of how things went/ how I feel ( good and bad ) and map out my journey. I find it therapuetic.

I will share periodically in the hope that even if it helps one person as well as myself  it will be worthwhile.

So day 1 was fine and I dont really feel any difference or notice anything.
One small point is that the mask made was slightly harder than when it was first made as it has set little harder over the weeks and was a little more moveable on the day made.
Took about 10 mins for actual radiotherpay treatment itself.
Drove home fine.

Meet with advanced practioner nurse every Thurs to discuss progress.
Aware might be a little different along the way but all good after day 1.

kind regards

Ian

  • Hi Angie

I found the nebuliser really helpful and my support team st hospital lent me one to use.

as you say not that pricey and not the money but i went on the assumption the nhs ones were chosen for a reason and fit for purpose.

id see if they are able to lend you one to be honest

    good luck with your appointment

    kind regards

  • Hi, just to let you know I used a Xyimelt for first time best nights sleep for a long time, thank you.....now can you help me with fatigue and no appetite please

  • I did put a couple of smiley faces at the end but didn't send lol

  • Oh the darn fatigue! You can't fight it. You just have to rest.
Appetite a very difficult one. Hubbys fatigue is slowly getting better. It's only the last two weeks he's actually gone out of the house three time!
Lots of fluids and little and often. re:fatigue Are you eating regular foods of having suppliments?
Do speak to your dietitian. My husband is beginning week 8 post treatment.  Still on feeds (fortisip) with an extra shot of calogen. Sips of water are still causing problems  SaLT are going to have a look at his throat with a camera at the end of the month.

  • Hi Pleased the xyimelts worked. I'm still using them 3.5 years on. As for fatigue I'm sorry I've no magic wand for that one. You  might not like my answer but here goes Listen to your body don't fight it. My experiences were to start with inwas having 3  naps a day then 2 naps.  I stopped last September I was literally having a daily power nap 20 mins was enough for me. I sleep longer during the night as well.As for my power naps I woukd be uo around 0830 then try ti fit quick 20 min nap after lunch I  found the best way wa sti go to bed fully dressed close my eyes and off I went inwas rarely longer than 20 min hubby had instructions to walks me if I was longer than 30. This for me allowed me to stay awake uomtom11 pm. As we say we are all different so just listen to body   the radiotherapy really does take it out of you.
As for appetite again only advise I can give you is I had 6 small meals a day spread through the day. smaller plates as well dinner plates can over face you The mantra food is fuel infoundnwas the way to go takes anythjng from 6 month to a year for appetite to return. It's really a case of  eat to live rather than live to eat .But it does get better for niw carry in getting the calories in .In all honesty I know yiu  might nit think it it's early days for yiu  my oncologist apologised he said I'm looking to cure yiu but will take a year out of yiur life he wasn't far out  it's baby steps some daysb2 forward and one back but yiu will get there we all do..

    Good luck Hazel

  • Thanks Hazel, I really appreciate your advice I will take it on board, its nice to know the fatigue is very common in most people, it's just trying to be patient, I'm beginning to realise this is going to take a lot longer to fully recover than I thought
