Radiotherapy for Throat Cancer

Hello all,

I have posted my little story on introduce yourself and basically I have been diagnosed with Stage 1 Throat cancer.

The prognosis is hopeful and I remain cheerful and positive. Its taken a while for the actual treatment to start so glad to get on with it at last.

I started my first day of radiotherpy today and have 29 more treatments to go over 6 week period.
I have made a little computer programme that logs my side effects and summarises episodes of each heading and I plan on keeping a daily log of how things went/ how I feel ( good and bad ) and map out my journey. I find it therapuetic.

I will share periodically in the hope that even if it helps one person as well as myself  it will be worthwhile.

So day 1 was fine and I dont really feel any difference or notice anything.
One small point is that the mask made was slightly harder than when it was first made as it has set little harder over the weeks and was a little more moveable on the day made.
Took about 10 mins for actual radiotherpay treatment itself.
Drove home fine.

Meet with advanced practioner nurse every Thurs to discuss progress.
Aware might be a little different along the way but all good after day 1.

kind regards

Ian

  • Thanks Hazel, you have been so helpful, I'm 7 weeks post treatment and if I was honest I thought I would be further forward than this, although my nurse says I'm doing very well, I'm on no medication now, but taste(appetite) is not brilliant, still got feeding tube in, but virtually no saliva is horrible especially at night, ive tried sprays but sipping water is just as good, one thing I find Hazel is now I have time on my hands I'm over thinking things any little twinge in throat/neck , the alarm bells start, can't wait for scan end of March

  • Hi Bushy. Trust your team it's exceedingly rare our type if cancers don't work. The treatment is brutal as you know  yes my big bear is we all get told few weeks you'll feel like normal or start tk. Sorry I know of no one who did. As fir dry mouth I still use xyimelts bought online one a night gets me 8 hours sleep   Appetite can take up to 6 months I just treated food as fuel and had n g tube out week 3 and made sure I had 6 ensures each day hard but worth it. Then  I was free ti try introducing foods slowly

  • Hi Bushy67 my husband is at the same point as you. Week 6 post treatment of tonsil cancer. Still has peg. Mouth is wetter and mucus in throat is lessening. But still causing problems.
sips of water are still sticking in throat.

Last check up they said in a couple of weeks they may pop a camera in to check swallowing.

  • Thanks Hazel ive now ordered the Xyimelts

  • Hi I cut them in half and stick the brown side to top of gum uo along cheek. They take a bit  if getting used to but I swear by them. If you've a tiny bit of saliva they will work if not sip water I tongue is wet then damp  the brown bit for 10?seconds and will stick. You can try a full one if yiu want to break in half use a sharp knife on a chopping board and swift smack dies the truck. Took us a while the get then cut even used hubby's dremmel tivsaw them didn't work.

  • Hi Chrissy, that's interesting your husband is at the same stage as me, ive got my first appointment with consultant 23rd February so will let you know how things go, hope things improve for him, I haven't had problems with swallowing but the last couple of days I've had hiccups which I had during chemotherapy treatment

  • Hi Chrissy treat it all like a marathon ot a sprint no other way. In a years time you'll look back and wonder huw you got through. But we do get there.

  • Hi Bushy

I'm glad you found blog helpful and positive.

The whole point of starting this thread years ago along with my blog was to share my actual expeience warts and all and hopefully help some along the way.

All of us who have actually went through the treatment and recovery on here know just how hard it can be.

You get through treatment, but recovery can be a long process with many pitfalls to overcome before you start to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
It can be slow but try and stay positive my friend and you will get through the challenges.

Doesnt always seem like it at the time I know but as I've said many a time, there is light at the end of the tunnel and same will apply to you.

Please let me know if I can help in anyway and I'll follow your trail on here and you are welcome to friend here or you can email me from contact details on blog if you would find a 1-1 helpful.

I found these really helpful as well as Hazel's suggestion and swore by them
