Radiotherapy for Throat Cancer

Hello all,

I have posted my little story on introduce yourself and basically I have been diagnosed with Stage 1 Throat cancer.

The prognosis is hopeful and I remain cheerful and positive. Its taken a while for the actual treatment to start so glad to get on with it at last.

I started my first day of radiotherpy today and have 29 more treatments to go over 6 week period.
I have made a little computer programme that logs my side effects and summarises episodes of each heading and I plan on keeping a daily log of how things went/ how I feel ( good and bad ) and map out my journey. I find it therapuetic.

I will share periodically in the hope that even if it helps one person as well as myself  it will be worthwhile.

So day 1 was fine and I dont really feel any difference or notice anything.
One small point is that the mask made was slightly harder than when it was first made as it has set little harder over the weeks and was a little more moveable on the day made.
Took about 10 mins for actual radiotherpay treatment itself.
Drove home fine.

Meet with advanced practioner nurse every Thurs to discuss progress.
Aware might be a little different along the way but all good after day 1.

kind regards

Ian

  • Well done hubby hope all goes well with his recovery and I hope your ok Chrissy must have been hard leaving him But things need  to get back to Normal must of been hard on you aswel seeing him so poorly X

can I ask would it pay me to get nebuliser? ..., is it for the mucus?
I haven't got to that stage yet thou

  • Hi Angie I used a nebuliser up to 6 times a day during snd after treatment. Firstly ask you hospital mine loaned one to me. I did buy a small portable one from Amazon to take on holiday with me. If you try one onky use saline or plain boiled water in them. Never but essential oils in. Mucus usually starts around week 3-4.

  • Thankyou hazel i will Ask them tomorrow

i had my first meeting with oncologist today everything going well I've nearly done 2 weeks now

long way to go yet and things are starting to change in mouth but like you Said take every day  X

  • Thank you Hazel.

Yes was a little odd going off to work. Will say I do feel a bit emotionally charged. I might burst if anyone crosses me! They'd better duck!
Loaning a nebuliser would be great. We got one from Argos for just over £40. But Amazon is a good call from Hazel. Hubby was given prescription for saline.
Talking about prescriptions. We found out local chemist would sometimes have to order in some meds or sometimes couldn't get them. We ended up using the hospital pharmacy. Drop off and picked up the next day. Easy peasy!

  • Hi everyone. Hope you're all doing well. I just have a question about thyroid dysfunction after radiotherapy. My partner is 2 months after finishing chemoradiotherapy treatment. He was doing really well, and we were starting to feel more normal and positive. However, his bloods have just come back as showing an overactive thyroid, and he's being sent for further tests and a thyroid scan. Just add it to the list of other scans we have to wait and worry about! Apparently thyroid dysfunction is quite common after radiotherapy on the neck so I just wanted to ask if anyone else had encountered this issue? Thanks.

  • Hi Weaselbear . It's quite common out  of 3 us who went through treatment at same time at my hospital onky me didn't end up on thyroxine .so don't stress the medication regulates the thyroid it's one of the side effects of treatment. It can take a few goes at getting the right dosage. I still have yearly thyroid.  blood tests has it can happen at any time .Hope this helps Hazel. Ps the figures are approx 60 % of head and neck patients have thyroid issues
