Radiotherapy for Throat Cancer

Hello all,

I have posted my little story on introduce yourself and basically I have been diagnosed with Stage 1 Throat cancer.

The prognosis is hopeful and I remain cheerful and positive. Its taken a while for the actual treatment to start so glad to get on with it at last.

I started my first day of radiotherpy today and have 29 more treatments to go over 6 week period.
I have made a little computer programme that logs my side effects and summarises episodes of each heading and I plan on keeping a daily log of how things went/ how I feel ( good and bad ) and map out my journey. I find it therapuetic.

I will share periodically in the hope that even if it helps one person as well as myself  it will be worthwhile.

So day 1 was fine and I dont really feel any difference or notice anything.
One small point is that the mask made was slightly harder than when it was first made as it has set little harder over the weeks and was a little more moveable on the day made.
Took about 10 mins for actual radiotherpay treatment itself.
Drove home fine.

Meet with advanced practioner nurse every Thurs to discuss progress.
Aware might be a little different along the way but all good after day 1.

kind regards

Ian

  • Hazel's typing alone is worth coming on here :)

Weaselbear or anyone else don't be shy ask anything you like we will try to help especially from Hazel her knowledge is on the subject is second to none and certainly helped me.

  • Hi Weaselbear. I waited for my biopsy for 4 weeks ( but they weren’t certain of diagnosis) 2 weeks later was diagnosed with tonsil cancer and 2 weeks after that had bilateral tonsillectomy, then few weeks after neck dissection then radiotherapy. I’m 2 weeks post treatment now ... once diagnosis was made I felt like I went through the system quickly so I’m sure would be same. Just struggling now with the recovery  but early days... hang in there with anxiety ... I had to resort to anxiety tablets to help me through as my usual means of coping didn’t work. Fingers crossed your other half gets seen ASAP.

  • Hi hope everyone is ok... I’m four weeks out of radiotherapy now and it’s been tricky but seem to be slowly making progress... taste buds nearly all back and managing a bit of fruit now, been out for short walks but struggling with fatigue/exhaustion  ( but can’t sleep). Neck is very tight from surgery plus RT. Still using xylimelts at night and brushing teeth throughout the day. I’m wondering if people put in sunscreen all year round or just hot days ...and if use sunscreen plus scarf or just sunscreen ... I’ve been wearing scarf, hat and sunscreen and I get so hot. Also the neck and swallow exercises... do people do them indefinitely or stop after few mths ? All in all feeling more like myself but it’s slow ..

    best wishes

  • Hi Katplanet my treatment was in December/ January so I didnt need sunscreen and have been fine with the skin on my neck once it healed, I found the swallow exercises extremely useful, I would carry on for as long as is needed until you are pain free and for as long as possible.

  • Hi Kat

I was a summer patient do first year  factor 50 and scarf plus hat. Niw j still use fsctor 50 on next as I was told the radiotherapy on neck makes us prone to skin cancer s later. Still wear sun hat if reslky hot. Still use duraphat was told sissy's will do still use 1// xyimelts ss I still gave dry mouth at night. Exercises probably did for 6 months. Well done on fruit apples still defeat me.

  • Thanks Hazel and Dave

So factor 50 on neck from now on a or all over Hazel ? And on days whennot so sunny ? I’m wondering if every day... sorry for more questions!  I’m nearly off painkillers... had my last codeine yesterday and missing it as it helps me sleep... finding venturing out bit nerve wracking atm because of Covid and being poorly so long but got to do it ... still yet to go to supermarket on my own

  • Hi sorry been in Wales I use 50 on neck during summer unless forecast says rain. The skin on beck is thin at best of times radiotherapy makes it more susceptible. You'll get your confidence back just takes time.
re codeine hope you've done slow withdrawal from it

    hazel xx

  • Thanks Hazel. Hope you had nice time in Wales. I tapered off codeine ... was hard but just on pregablin now . Mucus is still a big issue and stopping me from talking sometimes but I’m eating ok .. some days energy and others not ... really wanting to do more but practising patience !

  • Hi yes thank you we had a brill time walked and bikes 150 km in a week so pleased with that.
radiation fatigue is a fatigue like  no other all you can do is go with your body. Some days 2 steps forward snd one step back but eventually it all pans out. It's really early days for you but you are doing well. Remember to phase withdrawal from the pregablin as well

here if you need anythjng Hazel xx
