Radiotherapy for Throat Cancer

Hello all,

I have posted my little story on introduce yourself and basically I have been diagnosed with Stage 1 Throat cancer.

The prognosis is hopeful and I remain cheerful and positive. Its taken a while for the actual treatment to start so glad to get on with it at last.

I started my first day of radiotherpy today and have 29 more treatments to go over 6 week period.
I have made a little computer programme that logs my side effects and summarises episodes of each heading and I plan on keeping a daily log of how things went/ how I feel ( good and bad ) and map out my journey. I find it therapuetic.

I will share periodically in the hope that even if it helps one person as well as myself  it will be worthwhile.

So day 1 was fine and I dont really feel any difference or notice anything.
One small point is that the mask made was slightly harder than when it was first made as it has set little harder over the weeks and was a little more moveable on the day made.
Took about 10 mins for actual radiotherpay treatment itself.
Drove home fine.

Meet with advanced practioner nurse every Thurs to discuss progress.
Aware might be a little different along the way but all good after day 1.

kind regards

Ian

  • Hi Weaselbear,

Just to give you some re assurance and based on discussion with my consultant.

I was misdiagnosed and was over a year before told tonsil cancer,

I then had to have tonsils removed, then back teeth and recovery before actual treatment started and I too was just wanting the treatment to start.
My consultant re assured me not to be concerned over such a delay and would not really have any impact on diagnosis and treatment plan and he had no concerns over the wait and timeframe.
Was told from the get go that this is one of the most challenging treatments and recovery but one with the highest success rates of treatment and cure.
We was right and altough I undertsand your concerns and having to wait, the medics dont really have any concerns.
I have also listed my blog below detailing my journey, by timeframe and hopefully this, and with others, will give you some indication on the road ahead.

You will see that one of my saying was there is light at the end of the tunnel and its so true and will apply to your partner as well

Happy to help any way I can

  • Thank you so much Hazel for your kind words of wisdom. That really helps us to cope with the wait. And how amazing is your blog! Such a useful resource for anyone going through this - it's so kind of you all you to help others like this. And I promise to keep off Dr Google!

  • Thanks Ian for such a helpful reply. I'm so sorry your diagnosis took so long, but really glad to hear that it didn't impact your recovery. Your message and blog has been really reassuring to us both - thank you for sharing your story to help others.

To be honest, I've been blown away by the helpfulness of others on this blog, and we will definitely be in touch. Wishing you all well x

  • Hi Glad to help. We on here went through it at a similar time Ian  Dave Graeme and I. That's why we gave a rapport in the first one of us so we bounce off each other. During cancer you need a sense of humour and macabre.  Glad blog  helps keep in touch I will be updating it next month. Hope you can sleep a little easier it's not easy but if you start with the right positive mental attitude you'll get there.
