Radiotherapy for Throat Cancer

Hello all,

I have posted my little story on introduce yourself and basically I have been diagnosed with Stage 1 Throat cancer.

The prognosis is hopeful and I remain cheerful and positive. Its taken a while for the actual treatment to start so glad to get on with it at last.

I started my first day of radiotherpy today and have 29 more treatments to go over 6 week period.
I have made a little computer programme that logs my side effects and summarises episodes of each heading and I plan on keeping a daily log of how things went/ how I feel ( good and bad ) and map out my journey. I find it therapuetic.

I will share periodically in the hope that even if it helps one person as well as myself  it will be worthwhile.

So day 1 was fine and I dont really feel any difference or notice anything.
One small point is that the mask made was slightly harder than when it was first made as it has set little harder over the weeks and was a little more moveable on the day made.
Took about 10 mins for actual radiotherpay treatment itself.
Drove home fine.

Meet with advanced practioner nurse every Thurs to discuss progress.
Aware might be a little different along the way but all good after day 1.

kind regards

Ian

    Hi Hazel

Hope your feeling ok?  Tony's jaw is a lot better stayed away from hard food for a couple of days just nice and mushy instead.  He is seeing his own Dr next week and if still feeling sore will ask him about it then if no joy Christies .  See how it goes and make sure does his exercises.

aka Gormo (set an account up for tony :) forgot I was on it  )

  • Hi

that’s good just keep an eye on and write things down to tell drs as brains go to mush when u get sat down. Me am ok had first acupuncture yesterday to see if saliva glands will kickstart. Too early to say if anything worked although last night I only had one glass of water and slept through until 7am ! During day though have had several dry spells so who knows. It is debilitating having limited saliva but could be worse

    keep in touch

  • Hi

thats good The Tonys saliva it really is debilitating it’s something we all take for granted but when it’s gone it’s horrid.

well I feel that the acupuncture has done something I deffo am drinking less during the night so not getting uo to go to loo or get more water. I even managed a full bag of crisps last night ok walkers plain multi pack size and it took me an hour and bybthe end if it mouth was dry but water soon resored it next one tomorrow so watch this space.

    Onwards and upwards

  • I am coming to the end of the two weeks post end of radiotherapy for Stage 2 laryngeal cancer and these two weeks have been grim.

The increased level of mucus has been horrible and I have had some dreadful and frightening times, particularly in the morning, when I think I am literally drowning and can’t clear my air waves.  The hospital has lent me a nebuliser which has helped physically but also mentally as it has stopped me from panicking.

So many of the side effects have been far worse than I was told and the length of time for recovery far longer than I anticipated.    Constipation/ diarrhoea cycle has been difficult to manage.  I have not eaten or drunk anything for nearly six weeks other than nutritional drinks and water.  Have just discovered that a very weak brandy and soda gives a bit of a lift at the end of the day.  On these lovely summer evenings a glass of rose tastes like dishwater.

When have people been able to eat properly?  Food tasted OK?

  • Hi Maggie I am nearly a year post radiotherapy for tonsil cancer. You aren’t on your own re the 2 week period no one I know has been on the mend after 2 weeks some take longer some shorter. I am  ok soart from dry mouth and a 20 min nap most days all medications stopped in late January. Eating I have good day s n occasionally nightmare days. At 8 weeks we flew to Spain eating was difficult thankfully we’ve have a rental apartment there so I took Ensure high calories food supplements by Xmas I managed slowly most of my Xmas dinner. Meat most days can be challenging as fir alcohol no wsy my mouth is far to delicate. Haven’t had a drink since April last year just before diagnosis n no way can I see a drink anytime soon luckily I rarely drink so water is my tipple . I have a blog giving more details with links to others

just best in mind we are all different even though diagnosis n treatment s May be the same.

Baby steps is the way to go sonedays 2 forward n 1 back but I am proof there’s light at the end of the tunnel .

    Hope this helps
