Radiotherapy for Throat Cancer

Hello all,

I have posted my little story on introduce yourself and basically I have been diagnosed with Stage 1 Throat cancer.

The prognosis is hopeful and I remain cheerful and positive. Its taken a while for the actual treatment to start so glad to get on with it at last.

I started my first day of radiotherpy today and have 29 more treatments to go over 6 week period.
I have made a little computer programme that logs my side effects and summarises episodes of each heading and I plan on keeping a daily log of how things went/ how I feel ( good and bad ) and map out my journey. I find it therapuetic.

I will share periodically in the hope that even if it helps one person as well as myself  it will be worthwhile.

So day 1 was fine and I dont really feel any difference or notice anything.
One small point is that the mask made was slightly harder than when it was first made as it has set little harder over the weeks and was a little more moveable on the day made.
Took about 10 mins for actual radiotherpay treatment itself.
Drove home fine.

Meet with advanced practioner nurse every Thurs to discuss progress.
Aware might be a little different along the way but all good after day 1.

kind regards

Ian

  • Hi

Just wanted to ask if anyone is still struggling with eating.   My partner last had treatment in December and slowly he is getting there but recently he has started to find it hard to eat and he has been getting a sharp pain in his jaw going upto his ear.

Good to hear everyone is still.doing well.

    Thanks Michelle

Ps if Utd dont sign McGuire soon my partner will not be happy

  • I still get some jaw ache but I can’t say it’s a big problem and hasn’t stopped me from eating, I had it rammed home to me how important the mouth exercises were from day one and did them 3 or 4 times a day even when I was in agony around Christmas but I think it did me a lot of good.

  • Hi MIchelle

i have periods when eatings is still difficult as u type this today has been a bad calorie day somsat drinking a fresubin of all things oh how I hated those things during and after treatment but I realise niw we have to try  to maintain at least 2000 calories a day.i don’t have any jaw pain but like Dave’s says his he still doing jaw exercises i tend  to do them  in the car or whenever I am washing up. Our necks have taken a battering and the tendons are still prone to stiffness .

re then eatung make sure he hasn’t git oral thrush as that is very debilitating I can’t seem to get rid if it Flucozole and nystatin I seem immune to them both am back in salt and baking powder rinses.

My eating problems this weekend are stemming from the camera up the nose and down then rhroat I suffer every time from extra mucus and swelling for a few weeks oh the joys of cancer  lol

    Good luck

    Hazel

  • Hi Michelle

I would definitely get this checked out with your Consultant as we were told to watch out for ear pain. It’s probably nithing but always better to get it checked.

    Best wishes

    Emma xx

  • Hi Emma I have mentioned this to him as it had more or less gone but seems to have come back with a vengence

    Thanks xx

  • Hi Hazel

Tony is still having  his protein drinks most days as he feels it  perks him.up and also makes sure hes getting enough nutrients if he hasn't been able to eat much .   I defo think the exercises help.and he hasn't been keeping up with them . He has also struggled with thrush but fingers crossed he hasnt had a flare up for a week .   I bet the camera doesn't help Tony has only had it once and he hated they tried it at his last check to and he refused point blank ..

    Thanks and take care xx

  • Hi Dave

Tony's pain has been that bad he has been unable to eat but I do think not keeping up with his exercises hasnt helped.   I'm going to tell him (nag) to keep.on with the exercises but as Emma said speak to.his consultant to just check it out .

    Thanks
