Radiotherapy for Throat Cancer

Hello all,

I have posted my little story on introduce yourself and basically I have been diagnosed with Stage 1 Throat cancer.

The prognosis is hopeful and I remain cheerful and positive. Its taken a while for the actual treatment to start so glad to get on with it at last.

I started my first day of radiotherpy today and have 29 more treatments to go over 6 week period.
I have made a little computer programme that logs my side effects and summarises episodes of each heading and I plan on keeping a daily log of how things went/ how I feel ( good and bad ) and map out my journey. I find it therapuetic.

I will share periodically in the hope that even if it helps one person as well as myself  it will be worthwhile.

So day 1 was fine and I dont really feel any difference or notice anything.
One small point is that the mask made was slightly harder than when it was first made as it has set little harder over the weeks and was a little more moveable on the day made.
Took about 10 mins for actual radiotherpay treatment itself.
Drove home fine.

Meet with advanced practioner nurse every Thurs to discuss progress.
Aware might be a little different along the way but all good after day 1.

kind regards

Ian

  • Hi Graeme,

    Thanks for kind words.

Re water yes...throughout recovery I was drinking about 3/4 litres of water per day and sometimes more.

Now I would say I'm pretty much regular 3 lires a day approx...spread out from morning to night and always nice and cold...Dont really go below 3 litres a day I actually enjoy it now and used to

Plus Fiona has heating on full blast most of time and house feels like Tenerife, I need to drink.

Hazel banned me from,  but I do also indulge in cans diet coke that never seem to finish. My one wee luxury of ice cold from fridge.

  • Hi Hazel

Thank you for response and your right and good way of putting re food from childhood.

That never did us any harm huh and we never had all the fancy foods we can have now.
Good suggestions re your food options and I forgot about cauliflour. Fiona makes a mean cali cheese and that goes down really well.
Another really good point re eating and well said about function..I coudnt agree more and your right its not that we dont want to eat..sometime we just cant..physically...if only it was that easy to say "just eat" and again it was sometimes like medication eating rather than you say pleasurable.
I hope that you get some resolution for saliva issues and thats been around for a while and must be so frustrating. I'm lucky in that I'm not too bad now but I defo know what dry mouth is like for eating and I still need to drink in between bites to get down sometimes and food can sometimes stick a little. so yup, even eating is not always plain sailing and why we sometimes find it hard to do  and if you go along with feeling naff and add no appetite then its no wonder why so many mention that trouble eating/appetite is an issue.
OMG are you baning me from my nice cup of milky tea as well as diet coke?...I've never been a coffee drinker but I do like my cup tea. Not many and not every day but occasionally I will have small cup tea with food.

A day not raining.mmm you are blessed..never mind chum, soon be time for Spain again

  • Hello All

Well I finally got hold of my cancer nurse today, who went off to find out what was going on and called me back.  So story seems to be Lung MDT had their meeting yesterday and looked at my scans, they were not overly concerned at what was on them and want to see another scan in 3 months so I am taking this as good news.  This puts me back on the surgery list and will be decided when at this Tuesdays Head and Neck MDT so hopefully by Wednesday I will get a date for the surgery.  I know this is only the start and there may be radiotherapy to follow the surgery and i might end up with permanent  alternative feed or worse case scenario a breathing stoma, but the fight against this intruder can commence.  Have a good weekend all Mo

Also forgot to add has anyone been watching the New Amsterdam on Amazon Prime, its about American Public Hospital.  The director of surgery has throat cancer.  Found this to be a bit creepy with what is going on in my life at the moment.

  • Hi Mo

at last you’ve got some news. Nope haven’t seen programme will try n find it.

Try snd chill out over weekend and keep in touch with uodates

     best wishes
