Radiotherapy for Throat Cancer

Hello all,

I have posted my little story on introduce yourself and basically I have been diagnosed with Stage 1 Throat cancer.

The prognosis is hopeful and I remain cheerful and positive. Its taken a while for the actual treatment to start so glad to get on with it at last.

I started my first day of radiotherpy today and have 29 more treatments to go over 6 week period.
I have made a little computer programme that logs my side effects and summarises episodes of each heading and I plan on keeping a daily log of how things went/ how I feel ( good and bad ) and map out my journey. I find it therapuetic.

I will share periodically in the hope that even if it helps one person as well as myself  it will be worthwhile.

So day 1 was fine and I dont really feel any difference or notice anything.
One small point is that the mask made was slightly harder than when it was first made as it has set little harder over the weeks and was a little more moveable on the day made.
Took about 10 mins for actual radiotherpay treatment itself.
Drove home fine.

Meet with advanced practioner nurse every Thurs to discuss progress.
Aware might be a little different along the way but all good after day 1.

kind regards

Ian

  • Hi Laura

dont worry you wasn’t on your own thinking that !

one tip keep iff dr google my consultant told me that ,look st cancer U.K. and Macmillan forum you don’t need anything else ,like he said any figures are way out of date and anyone can write anything .the blogs that we have written are truthful facts what happened to us ,everyone is different .snother blog written about 4 years ago that helped me in the beginning is

www.gammaraygary.wordpress.com he is also in her under the nickname Vatch.

emma  @Newlymarried  has been a great source of reasoning for me.

just remember the cure rate is a very good one it’s just the treatment that’s nit pleasant but if me a 61 year old female can do it and come out the other side any one can

please keep us up to date. Take a pen n paper with u ask questions ,was he diagnosed h p v 16. + do u kniw or ask

Forewarned is definitely the way to go. We had no one to talk to or get any advice from as we embarked on our journey and I only found this site once Paul was in remission .

Once you have a plan if you want to chat please come back and if we can be if any support then here we are.

  • Hi Hazel,

ah well just to share with you my friend that for the first time today,  I have managed a little food.

2 fresh thin frankfurters and little heinz sauce to help go down. First of something hot and solid that I have tolerated for some considerable time now and hope the baby steps of some progression

So chuffed as not great but I did manage as little worried about weight loss so these are quite fattening so should help.

So i now have a menu that i can tolerate of think frankfurters and mini curl wurlys for dessert.

Who and hoooo....a la cart or what!

Hope you are still doing well and enjoying your pies !

    kind regards

  • Hi Ian

bravo what a great start. But one thing is missing a starter !,,, no Michelin award sorry.

I kniw the feeling of elation ,when I had the inside of a m n s pork pie you would have though I had won the lottery. !

had some good news one of the girls who I got to know early in the process had her scan mri yesterday n consultant later who although couldn’t give her a full clearance until due process has been done was very confident the cancer had gone. She like us had been unable to eat for weeks and during treatment was sick up to 8 times a day so anither good great prognosis.

Keep up the eatng ok it’s repetitive but any food is better than constant shakes .what are u like with eggs ? Poached are easy to slip down on a bed of *** white toast spread with lashings of lurpack I find toast easier than bread on its own.  Dont get down if one day frankfurter s seem off it can happen just find a replacement then try them a few days later  strange but the processed meats are much easier ok nit first choice normal but at thus stage take anythjng

corned beef hash n Yorkshire puddings are another good one

have u tried plain vanilla ice cream ? J couldn’t eat ut for a while then all of a sudden I can it opens up the possibility of buns n cakes just put on top let it melt makes it easier to slip down.

i am ok steak pie chips only a few n beans tonight  followed by a chocolate eclair  notbtried one recently

like u my weight dropped but has remained stable now for last few weeks not increasing but not lost any more  off oramorph totally n started reducing co codomol 30 mg to 8 mg doing it slowly replacing one tablet every 3 days

    kerp in touch
