Breast lumpectomy and node removal op

hi to anyone due to have this op

i had mine yesterday. Got there for 7:30 am. Changed into gown, dressing gown nd slippers. Had bp nd temp done met consultant, anaesthetist. Had breast marked up then radioactive injection (to help them find nodes during op- negates the need for the blue dye).

Then the wait to go. There were 4 of us for the same op so we pulled up chairs nd sat and chatted.

I went for op at 1:30. Woke up in resus then taken back to room (no bed in room just a chair)5:00pm. Bp and temp. Cup of tea nd toast. Approx hr later told could go home.

I have no pain ( I am taking 2 paracetamol 4hrly). I slept well last night. I can move arm freely etc and had no problems getting dressed or moving around.

I am waiting now for the district nurse coming to check me over. At the moment there is no bruising and very little swelling.

All the staff were brilliant I can not fault them.

If you too are to have this op I can honestly say it was no where near as bad as I had built it up in my mind. As always it is the waiting that is the worst.

Good luck to those due to have this and try not to worry

Take. Care

  • Thanks Rileyroo

    Worth knowing.

My RT will b the same trust but at a different hospital to the one I’ve been going to. I hope they are as good.

I think they ink mark up at mine as well but I will ask about the ultraviolet ones (worth the ask) Think they offer to remove them after if wanted. Cos that’s just what we want - to add another procedure on at the end!

Oh well back to my new mantra- means to an end

    Take care x

  • Mine won't take them off, didn't care when I said I was going to have that done. I've found somewhere that offers the service free so will probably go there afterwards. Was really hacked off about it to be honest. As you said, who wants another procedure?  I know some people think these marks are some kind of badge of honour but not me.

  • Hey ladies have been thru the CT scan, tattoos and rad. The tattoos do disappear after a few months. I cannot fault the team at cancer centre I had rad at. I will be honest I was very anxious every single time. I had rad every day for 6 weeks. One step at a time. Recover from op. The exercises do get easier and I still do them. Try not to worry too much - i know easier said than done. Take it easy.

  • Morning jbains

Thank you for keeping me grounded... again bless :-)

I’ve done my morning exercises(not half pulled yesterday) but..felt bit better today already.

I woke up this morning on my side! Must have turned in my sleep nd it didn’t wake me  with pain like last time yeahhh.

    have a good day ladies.

    take care

  • I know it's very frustrating but the one thing I still find hard is the changes to my life. I was an extremely active and ambitious woman. I do a bit of something physical and I am exhausted! I have to take the day after gym as a rest day. Guess I'm on a bit of a downer since Friday so pls excuse me. The exercises do really help which is why i still do them. Sore arm and sore breast is still there so am now just used to it. I know am very fortunate in being detected early and all that but being in pain and tired constantly does drag me down. I decided against working (dunno if you recall was going to temp). I think I need to start with part time and see how i go. Got my nails done today so smile when i look at my hands! There's always a plus somewhere!

  • Hi ty for it post it has helped a lot I'm due to go in next week how long before you go back to work I have had mixed answers thanks x
  • Guess I was one of the lucky ones. Restructure at work and I was in middle of consultations when i was diagnosed. Suppose it worked out for the best as I had no other worry but to get through this. I was made redundant so had a double whammy to deal with but I'm alive and recovering - albeit very slowly! Do a bit more physical things around the house and when you're out and about. If you can manage it guess a staggered return to work - if that's what you want. I have been working since i was 15 yrs old and am now 50 so I decided to not work for a year but as I've always worked I want to now go back but know that physically I won't be able to run my house and work. It's a really tough decision and I hope it works out best for you.

  • I went back after two and a half weeks but only did half days for the first two weeks back.
  • Hi jbains

The physical and emotional go hand in hand so if either is off kilter it knocks the other.

I’m gonna sound so twee here but time is a healer. You know you have been through a lot both physically and emotionally - getting over what you have been through will take some acceptance of time needed to feel well. The procedures may have ended but getting over the ravages of it all is the next step.

Don’t b hard on yourself keep having the you time. Heck if I went to the gym I’d need a wk t get over it never mind a day.

If you feel you are ready for work you go for it me girl. Like everything weigh up the pros and cons for agency/bank vs part time. More security job wise if part time. More flexibility is choosing where and when if agency/bank. (Me - I took early retirement and absolutely love not working:-)

Just had yr nails done yeah! Best excuse in the world t get out of doing dishes lol.

Chin up me dear. Vent on here if you need too. Nothing like someone who is actually going through it to understand.

    take care
