Breast lumpectomy and node removal op

hi to anyone due to have this op

i had mine yesterday. Got there for 7:30 am. Changed into gown, dressing gown nd slippers. Had bp nd temp done met consultant, anaesthetist. Had breast marked up then radioactive injection (to help them find nodes during op- negates the need for the blue dye).

Then the wait to go. There were 4 of us for the same op so we pulled up chairs nd sat and chatted.

I went for op at 1:30. Woke up in resus then taken back to room (no bed in room just a chair)5:00pm. Bp and temp. Cup of tea nd toast. Approx hr later told could go home.

I have no pain ( I am taking 2 paracetamol 4hrly). I slept well last night. I can move arm freely etc and had no problems getting dressed or moving around.

I am waiting now for the district nurse coming to check me over. At the moment there is no bruising and very little swelling.

All the staff were brilliant I can not fault them.

If you too are to have this op I can honestly say it was no where near as bad as I had built it up in my mind. As always it is the waiting that is the worst.

Good luck to those due to have this and try not to worry

Take. Care

  • Glad it went well Sandra, easy peasy. Just a word tho, my bruising took about a week to come out then I looked as tho I'd been beaten up. Hopefully that might mot happen to you. Take care!
  • Hi Rileyroo

thank you for all your earlier help it really did get me through.

Eee Rileyroo -I was given the option for just a local anaesthetic and to watch... I declined:-0 instead they gave a light general(just enough to make me sleep and local for the op. Apparently cuts down on side affects and risks.

The district nurse called and said she had to google what the seeds were that they put in so I explained to her what they were bless. She checked me over and said both I and wound looked great - the dressing  is t come off in a weeks time - I could go t gp surgery for this or just take it off myself - so gonna do myself( obs any probs to ring the number she gave me)

Don’t know if you’s have this but up here we have Florence - it’s a text service - so last night I got a text asking how I comfortable I was 1-10 1 is very. I texted 2 so got a reassuring text back but apparently if I put a 9  or higher the text to come back to hosp and what ward to present to. I’ll cont t get texts for the next few weeks asking how I’m progressing on all aspects such Movement with appts sent for physio if got problem etc  I’m rather impressed with it.

all in all the whole op experience has turned out to be much smaller than my mind made it - thanks again for trying to tell me this :-)

I’ve stopped taking the paracetamol cos just a bit tender now no actual pain- hope it lasts:-)

Fingers crossed my bruising will b minimall and I don’t crash nd burn tomorrow .

keep well in mind and body

  • Yes agree with rileyroo - it does get better.x
  • Thanks for encouragement ladies:-)

Just seemed a bit of a jump from do not lift elbows above shoulders to lift hands up nd touch the sky lol.

I can do it...but can not half feel the pull.

Oh well - and reach and reach and reach:-)

  • You'll probably find that you'll be doing them one day and suddenly realise that it doesn't hurt anymore. Just as a bonus, noticed my are slightly less saggy than before.

Dread to think what state the left one will be in when the rt lot have done. Roll on 25 October when it's done.

  • R u having more work done Rileyroo?

  • Radiotherapy starts next week. I see the bs again next August. Depending on how the the rt turns out, I might be lwooking at some type of reconstruction. Bcn seemed to think it was quite likely that this would be the case altho she said it is my decision, stating the obvious, obviously.
  • Ah.

Hey u will b finished and sorted and done RT wise for Christmas then (oh for the good ol days when done for Christmas just meant yr shopping was done)!

Depending on how quick they r for me there is a fair chance I will b still having my RT.... sigh. Already getting invites for Xmas meals etc but have no idea where I’ll b at so can’t book anything. But hey means to an end as they say.

just wondering I understand they tattoo the mark up points - going with each persons is different but are the tats dots or bigger than that.

Good luck for next week me dear let us know how things go.

Keep well in mind and body

  • They prefer to put permanent ones on where I have the misfortune to go. I didn't want them at all and said so but anyway, I've ended up with two small dots which look like pen dots. That was the concession they made, I gather they prefer something a bit bigger normally. I think it also depends on which part of your breast is being treated as to how many they want to put on. Scientific it isn't. A needle and a bottle of ink, just how jailbirds do theirs, yay! They didn't like that particular comment needless to say. Your treatment centre sounds much more enlightened tho, I understand that some centres can put the kind on which show up under ultra violet light but can't be seen otherwise, much more civilised.
  • Thanks Rileyroo

    Worth knowing.

My RT will b the same trust but at a different hospital to the one I’ve been going to. I hope they are as good.

I think they ink mark up at mine as well but I will ask about the ultraviolet ones (worth the ask) Think they offer to remove them after if wanted. Cos that’s just what we want - to add another procedure on at the end!

Oh well back to my new mantra- means to an end

    Take care x

  • Mine won't take them off, didn't care when I said I was going to have that done. I've found somewhere that offers the service free so will probably go there afterwards. Was really hacked off about it to be honest. As you said, who wants another procedure?  I know some people think these marks are some kind of badge of honour but not me.

  • Hey ladies have been thru the CT scan, tattoos and rad. The tattoos do disappear after a few months. I cannot fault the team at cancer centre I had rad at. I will be honest I was very anxious every single time. I had rad every day for 6 weeks. One step at a time. Recover from op. The exercises do get easier and I still do them. Try not to worry too much - i know easier said than done. Take it easy.

  • I know it's very frustrating but the one thing I still find hard is the changes to my life. I was an extremely active and ambitious woman. I do a bit of something physical and I am exhausted! I have to take the day after gym as a rest day. Guess I'm on a bit of a downer since Friday so pls excuse me. The exercises do really help which is why i still do them. Sore arm and sore breast is still there so am now just used to it. I know am very fortunate in being detected early and all that but being in pain and tired constantly does drag me down. I decided against working (dunno if you recall was going to temp). I think I need to start with part time and see how i go. Got my nails done today so smile when i look at my hands! There's always a plus somewhere!

  • Hi jbains

The physical and emotional go hand in hand so if either is off kilter it knocks the other.

I’m gonna sound so twee here but time is a healer. You know you have been through a lot both physically and emotionally - getting over what you have been through will take some acceptance of time needed to feel well. The procedures may have ended but getting over the ravages of it all is the next step.

Don’t b hard on yourself keep having the you time. Heck if I went to the gym I’d need a wk t get over it never mind a day.

If you feel you are ready for work you go for it me girl. Like everything weigh up the pros and cons for agency/bank vs part time. More security job wise if part time. More flexibility is choosing where and when if agency/bank. (Me - I took early retirement and absolutely love not working:-)

Just had yr nails done yeah! Best excuse in the world t get out of doing dishes lol.

Chin up me dear. Vent on here if you need too. Nothing like someone who is actually going through it to understand.

    take care
