Psa level

My name is Craig.I had robotic surgery almost 4 years ago. Psa level was okay until last April,it read 0.13,then in August 0.19 and my most recent.Jan 5th of this year 0.24.  I had an appointment yesterday, and doc says radiation is required now. Has anyon else been down this path? Should my doctor have been alarmed when the reading was 0.13?  I read an number or 0.0 to 0.2 should warrant a visit. I am worried now that the schdduling person, who made my last appointment says, wow, you havent been in in awhile, somebody dropped the ball...Any suggestions..

  • Hi Craig,

I also like you was diagnosed with prostate cancer over six years ago. My psa was 70 with a gleeson score of 3+3. I wasnt give a choice regarding treatment as my psa was so high; I was just told that I was going to be be given hormone therapy for two years with 37 radiotherapy sessions a few months after starting the hormone therapy.  After a few weeks of treatment finnishing, my psa was only 0.01, the lowest that can be measured so the combination of the two treatments was very sucessful.

Just bear in mind, your psa is still very low. For someone my age 72 it should be 3.5 to 4.5 Mine is slowly creeping up its now 1.4 but my oncologist said it would in time and he doesnt expect it to go any higher than 3.5. I have a psa test every four months at present.

I wish you all the best with your treatment. Take care and let us know how you get on, Brian.

  • Hi Brian,

did your treatmeant mean prostate removal?  I know of someone with a reading of 70 and they have scheduled him to have it  removed very quickly. Should he get a second opinion?

    Hope you are well.

  • Hi Marty,

No I didnt have the prostate removed. I was on hormone therapy for two years and had 37 radio therepy treatments. My PSA is still only 1.3 after a recent test which is lowere than it was six months ago.

If it were me i would almost certainly get  second opinion

    Hope you are well.

    Regards, Brian

Thank you very much for this information.

I am going to pass it on. It's not for me but I wanted to find out about  experiences from other people to inform him.

I hope you continue to do well.
