CIN 3 and HPV

In March 2013 I had a regular smear test which came back with high risk HPV and mild dysplasia, I had a colposcopy and biopsy, with results stating I had CIN 1, on the 17th November 2013 I had my follow up colposcopy and smear test, today I got results which state I have severe dysplasia and have to have treatment in a few weeks, the Dr advised this is not cancer and she doesn't think it will be either. Just seeing whether anyone else has had these results and treatment and whether the treatment was successful, I am having treatment done under local anaesetic also- I also one day want to have children but today with these results this seems a long shot now, I am 28 years old and this has gutted me and hope that I could maybe get a bit of reassurance and advised of anyone going through the same thing.

  • Hi Maxmill

I am in the same situation as you, could I ask how your treatment went and what they said about the pain? I have pain too, not like yours but mines like where the side of my womb is, if that makes sense.. between public bone and hip- just on one side. Had biospy 2 weeks ago and got cin 2-3 results yesterday but they are taking it to the MDT meeting? At the end of this month to decide my treatment and then go from there. I am worrying as to why it needs to be taken to this meeting first and why I cant just go ahead with the standard treatment, its making me worry that they think it could be cancer :( x

  • Hi Kayleigh,

Pleased to hear it all went smoothly and put your mind at rest.

Just wanted to chip in (for others reading this feeling worried) that a couple of years ago I had CIN3, remember seeing the word 'severe' on a letter and feeling very distressed. At my colposcopy appt I burst into tears when I arrived!

Anyway, I ended up going back for a LLETZ under general anaesthetic (they just said it would be more comfortable for me). It all went smoothly, the hospital staff were absolutely brilliant. I don't remember any pain or bleeding afterwards which was a pleasant surprise.

Had a follow up smear 6 months later which was normal, so now back on the 3 yearly smears.

So - if you're reading this feeling worried, please try not to! In the majority of cases this turns out to be quite a minor thing - simple treatment to keep you safe and healthy, then you can move on with your life :)

  • Hello

so I had LETTZ 3 weeks ago this Tuesday

that gets sent off and my results were back friday

originally they thought CIN 2-3 now it's come back CIN 2

amd the HPV is obviously still there

they said it was only a small area on my cervix that was affected

I go back in 6 months for a check smear to clear and colposcopy

pains still there Doctor's referring me for gynaecologist and a laposcopy where a camera goes in thru navel and looks round to check what's going on

I also have an ultrasound booked for 2/3 weeks time

try not to worry honest at least you r in the right place the system being checked xxx

  • Hi everyone, a little bit of a long post but would love some replies.

I was first seen 3 years ago, with hpv an erosion on my cervix which was causing me alot of bleeding during sex, when I got my first smear I came back as Cin1 with hpv.

My first treatment was cold coagulation to burn off the cells which were only in around the erosion. 6 months later when I went in for another smear I came back as cin 1 and cin 2 with hpv.

The doctors then took a biopsy but it was

after spreading so took it from 5 different places on my cervix, I then fell pregnant which ment no treatment for over a year, but they said that having a natural delivery can make it all better as it will flush everything out.

I then went back 3 months after having my little boy and came back at cin 3 with high hpv. (had natural delivery)

The doctors then decided to do the LLETZ procedure, 3 months later I went back for a check up and my smear still came back at cin 3 and high hpv, I got 3 biopsys taken again and the nurse couldn't believe I was going through this at my age as I'm only 25 years old.

She said because I would like to have more kids and I am so young she will discuss my case with surgeons and other gine doctors and nurses.

Our little boy is now 17 months and we would love to start trying for a new baby but I am so scared that if I leave this untreated it will only get worse

I should hear something from the doctors as the meeting was scheduled for 8fh of October.

  • Hi Molly May,

    How did your meeting go?

I'm in the same position as you and have had a biopsy last week and the letter came today saying CIN 2-3. I need to go in for exact words 'our monthly meeting ' to discuss treatment options.

This wording makes me think it may be worse too why monthly?

Hope the outcome for you was okay and not what I'm thinking now too.

    Best wishes.

  • Hi all,

I remember when I was first diagnosed with HPV and abnormal cells (Both CIN2 and VAIN2) how worried and unsure I was. I checked so many forums but usually just saw more worry and stress - so I wanted to tell my story to help put other women at ease..

My case was extreme. After over 6 years involving 2 operations and numerous smears and colposcopies I can now say that I'm free of both CIN/VAIN and HPV and have gone back to the 3 yearly NHS screening.

HPV is SO common and can’t be stopped completely with any kind of contraception. Don’t feel bad that it’s happened to you. Chances are loads of your pals and family have had the same virus - in fact 80% of sexually active people worldwide have had it. Any CIN whether mild (CIN1), moderate (CIN2) or severe (CIN3) ISN’T cancer and the chances are it won't develop into cancer - and even if it does it can take YEARS to develop. See it as a positive thing, your doctor can do something NOW that will prevent you getting cancer in the future - how great is that?!

Yes, colposcopies are a little uncomfortable but they're fine really, only 15 minutes out of your life and the nurses and doctor will always put you at ease. If you're worried or the position is uncomfortable, tell them - they're there for you. I've had biopsies and a polyp removed and hardly felt both. If in the rare chance you have a bad experience you can ask to be referred to another hospital – it’s YOUR body.  If you have questions after any examination or result, call them. Don’t Google. They are the experts and have always been happy to take any of my calls.

My body took a while to fight the infection so I started taking vitamins to help it along. Leading up to my first normal (yay) smear result I took a good multivitamin every day and also daily capsules of green tea. I can't say that this definitely did the job but it seemed to work for me.

All really want to say is, don't get down about this, it's super common and how lucky are we that we live in a day and age where this (potential) disease can be stopped?! Go to your smears, go to your colposcopies, if you need treatment then fine, go for it. I've had treatment both under local and general anaesthetic and I will say go general if you can as you wake up with just a little cramping for a few days then all is back to normal.

My case is a rare one as the cells returned after treatment and yours will likely be gone much quicker. There were times that I got upset or frustrated with yet another positive result or biopsy but I persevered and got there in the end. Take a loved one or pal with you to your examinations (to wait outside) and congratulate yourself after each one with a nice meal or glass of wine.

You’ve got this. Stick at it girl. Honestly, you’ll be so proud of yourself when you get that first all clear!

  • Hi

just been reading Through this post and wondered if anyone can help me. So I was due a smear in April 2020 but I was pregnant at the time so I missed this smear and had my smear in January 2021 when my son was 12 weeks old. This come back with abnormal cells low grade and I was sent for a colposcopy on February 4th 2021 I received my results back from This a few days ago and an appointment letter for the 17th March to have the loop procedure done. After the colposcopy and the biopsy it has come back cin3 and not low grade like they origanlly thought. I'm really worried as I have been bleeding nearly continuously for the last two months I would have a period a longer period then stop for a few days then start again and there is always blood when I wipe. Did anyone have these kind of symptoms with cin3 at all. Waiting for my loop procedure just seems like forever as I'm so worried.

    thanks x

  • Hi Sara, I've been on this forum trying to find answers to myself aswel as i am booked in to see the doctor tomorrow at 3:00pm, i had my last smear 3 years ago this October they were HPV positive with CIN 1 and cervical erosion, the past two months i have had a period that lasted two days then literally nothing, when i can put pound to a penny mine are always 5 days, i am 30 years old and have been off contraception for over a year and a half, from the pill which i had taken since i was about 14. I had regulated my periods nicely. Anyway due to the cervical erosion it causes me to bleed abit after sex which hasn't happened in a couple of years until very very recently I've had a steady partner and I've ruled out pregnancy by a test, since my last 'period' of two days ended i have heavy bleeding again (currently now) two week later which didn't happen on the first time, this has had my head in a total flap because i asked my doctor a year ago before I started medication to sort my skin breakouts out when can i have another smear because I am sure people who have had abnormal ones get one yearly! But she said no tapping away on the computer to check you're not due one until October of this year, i said all this to my doctor at the same surgery and he has told me he wants to see me for an examination which is the one i am going to tomorrow, since i had that conversation with him on the phone last week i have started bleeding again which was after sex once again but this one hasn't stopped yet and is heavy.
sorry for the really long post- i felt like ours were similar so wanted to give you a full picture albeit abit TMI

    hope you're well x

  • Hi Rhea

since my last post I had my loop procedure done and my results come back cin2 and they think they removed it all and for a smear again in 6 months.
I also have still been bleeding a lot and spoke with the doctor who thinks this is due to being On and off the mini pill as o take it for a while then stop and then started again. I have just stopped taking it all together now to try and regulate my periods but still not 100 percent this is the cause of the bleeding.
Try not to worry as you are up to date with your smears, and you have bled before because of your cervical erosion so could be just this again. And your doing the right thing by getting an examination hopefully this will put your mind at rest.

let us know how you get on x

  • So glad you've had the procedure done and get followed up again in 6 months i hope that has helped put your mind at ease :)

I personally found myself better off the pill than on it so fingers crossed once your body has made the adjustment to settle down into a routine it will be fine for you but make sure you keep in contact if you're not feeling 100% happy because you lnow your body better than anyone else does! Thankyou so much for replying hearing from someone else in the situation has made me feel less wobbly and i shall post an update tomorrow x
