Post-surgery bra

Hi

I'm about to have breast cancer surgery (lumpectomy) and am trying to find a suitable post- surgery bra, front fastening. I have tried so many on but none seem to be the correct size. Can anyone recommend a suitable bra?

Many thanks in anticipation

  • Hi Poodlelulu. Like you I had a breast lump and lymph nodes removed 2 years ago now, followed by chemotherapy and radiotherapy. My poorly boob is still incredibly sensitive so I have to take care not to knock it and a good bra is definitely necessary in my case ( I am quite well endowed, or I was til a surgeon took a chunk out of one! :(  ).  Anyway, bras. Have you considered a sports type bra with no fastenings at all? You step into them and pull them up scooping your boobs up on the way! They are also described as sleep bras. Some are more substantial than others but they are more forgiving size wise being unstructured so you can get away with the fitting more easily. I've been wearing them around the house since my surgery and I also wear one to bed as I find it keeps my sore breast more "contained", for want of a better word. You can get them from Amazon usually in packs of 3 or 5 at quite reasonable prices. QVC sell them too.

Wishing you all the very best of luck with your surgery. Do let us know how things go and remember you are stronger than you think but we are always here when you need us.

Happy bra hunting, love and positivity to you, Mog, xx

  • Many thanks Mog for your very helpful reply. I must say I hadn't thought of a sports bra, thinking that I should have easy access to my breasts by having a front opening bra but actually when I think about it this is not really necessary. I'm going to take your advice and order some sports bras from Amazon.

Thank you so much for your good wishes. I've got my fingers crossed for next Thursday.

I hope you don't have to suffer much longer with your sensitive breasts and you can look forward to a cancer and pain free future.

Take care. Sending much love to you too. Lulu xxx

  • Good morning Lulu, do I take it from your late night reply that you are a fellow insomniac? I seem to post almost 100% of my messages in the wee small hours when I really should be asleep. I have suffered on and to be fair, mostly off, with restless legs syndrome since my childhood and unfortunately chemotherapy triggered it again and this time it hasn't left me. I go to bed really tired and my legs then decide that they want to run a marathon! It is SO frustrating! :(

If you do decide to order some bras from Amazon, I havebeen looking back to see which ones I have myself. The lighter weight ones that I sleep in are Blu Apparel multipack seamless comfort bras for maternity/sleep and they come in a variety of colours and pack sizes (3 are £11.99,  6 are £18.99). You might find it more comfortable to sleep in one post surgery depending on where your incisions are and how big busted you are. I'm an E cup and definitely benefitted from having my boobs restrained at night. The heavier fabric ones which I still wear to this day around the house are Lemuf 3-pack seamless wire free yoga bras with removable pads. They come in a pack of 3 in various colours and are actually on offer at the moment at £16.49.

I hope this extra information helps you. Do let me know how you get on. Also please let me know when you have a date for your operation so I can send you lots of love and positivity through the ether.

I have sent you a friendship request and if you accept it we can message each other in private if  you'd like to do that.

    Take care of yourself,

    Much love, Mog, xx

  • Me again, I'm a dozy so and so, I've just re read your post and see that your op is next Thursday. Sending you all the luck in the world. If we don't "speak" again before then I will be thinking of you and keeping my fingers crossed that it all goes well, as I'm sure it will.

Be brave, keep your chin up and just take things one day at a time. When I was first diagnosed my knee *** reaction was "I can't do this", but I could,  and I did. On my own. If I can do it anyone can. The fear of the unknown is the worst, I'm sure you will find the reality much better than you are expecting.

I'm here anytime you want to chat about anything, it doesn't have to be cancer related, we can chat about anything.

Very best wishes and love, Mog, xx

  • Hi, I bought some zip front bras from cotton traders, which I have found really useful and comfortable, since my lumpectomy, and  not too expensive. Sainsbury’s also do some lightly padded ones for £10 which I also have my eye on ! The best of luck with your op :-)

  • Hi Poodlelulu,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am sorry to hear that you are starting out on this journey too. I bought the slip on sports bras, but found them difficult to lift over my head following surgery. Asda, Marks and Spencer and Primark all have front fastening bras for post-surgery wear. If they're not available in the shops, many of them are available online.

I shall be thinking of you on Thursday and hoping that all goes well.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
