The waiting game

I'm so glad I found this forum and now know that waiting for results is difficult for everyone at times I think I'm just a negative person but it seems the waiting game is tough.  I had duct ecstasia around 8 years ago with no reoccurrence.  I recently decided I would get the lump checked behind my left nipple but wasn't concerned as my nipple has been inverted for 8 years and I fully expected to be told it's duct blockage again.  Came as a shock to find that's not likely. .  3 biopsies on lump and one in Lymph node.  Words used like worried and highly suspicious during consultation.  To be honest I'm in shock that awful sick feeling in your tummy and another ten days till results appointment.  I asked some direct questions but obviously she wouldn't commit till results are in but in her experience I will be having treatment. Keeping as busy as I can but an emotional wreck right now. Relieved to hear this is the norm for most of you awaiting results.

  • Hiya

I am new to the forum and I am so worried as well.

I found a lump on my right breast a couple of days ago and i have an appointment with my gp next Thursday...the waiting game is the hardest ...I cannot stop crying and thinking the worst...it is really hard .

I hope you get some great results .

  • You too it's a worrying  time for sure.  I feel exactly  the same.  My best day this week as so busy at work.  Distraction  seems to be the best thing right now. Hope your results are good too x

  • How are you coping Hun? You have been in my thoughts.  I have spoke to my care team a few times when my mind has been running wild and they have been so kind and reassuring.  They have told me to speak to them when I get fixated on dark thoughts and every time they lift me and make me think more rationally so please speak with them if you too get too down with it all.  Sending love x

  • You're too kind! :)

I've had my CT scan and MRI yesterday/today and am meeting my oncologist tomorrow morning. So I'm hoping it will help to get some clarity on treatment! It is a strange feeling knowing that something is wrong in your body, but you just have to sit around and wait which I think fuels the anxiety even more.

The nurse today was ever so kind when I had my MRI, she calmed me down and told me to just focus on taking 1 step at a time. So I'm currently trying to take my mind off of things and keeping busy. I know me worrying about the results won't change the outcome so I'm trying my hardest to not think about it constantly.

Really pleased to hear your care team has been so kind and reassuring! The dark thoughts are always around the corner, but it is good that you have people you can turn too when the thoughts get too heavy.

Please know that we are all here for you too! X

  • Good news that everything is happening  so quickly sounds like you have a good team looking after you.  Just stay as strong as you possibly  can.  Company of friends prove a great distraction for me and someone making me belly laugh is like being given a hundred quid so fill your days with good friends and talk drivvle it just gives your head a break from it as I've found it consuming some days.  Please let us know how you get on.  We can do this

  • Hi Elvira114,

So good to hear that everything is happening so quickly .

It is really hard to stop all the dark thoughts but as you said when you have the support of people around you it is a good feeling.

Sorry my English is not that good so I am really sorry if I don't make any sense sometimes.

I have received  my letter for the hospital appointment yesterday for next Wednesday in the morning!

I am so scared what the tests will show and what will happen during the appointment.

I can stop crying  when I am on my own at home,  I can't concentrate at all.

I am sending ally love to you all.

    Have a good, restful night.

    Thinking all of you .xxx

  • Don't apologise, you make complete sense! :)

I know it's really hard when you're alone, I have the same and they are the moments when I can't stop either. But

I'm really glad you know when your appointment will be, at least you know when the next step is, and hopefully they will be able to give you some answers.

Is there anything you could do meanwhile to take your mind off of things, something that you enjoy doing?

thinking of you, sending all positive thoughts!! X

  • Thank you so much

I am trying to occupy my mind with work and house work when I am alone at home and then when my hubby and my little daughter is back home it is a bit easier .

My hubby is very supportive which is so good but I have not said anything to tye rest of the family.  When I see them and I feel so guilty bug I don't want to worry them.  I know they will start fussing and get very stressed and worried for me .

I am hoping  next week I will find my fate and have a plan of what will happen.

Thank you so much for your kind words.

Have a good night. Sending my love.xxx

  • Just wanted to let you know I'm thinking of you and sending you all my positive thoughts for tomorrow. I hope you get some clarity!

    hugs x

  • Thank you so much Elvira114,

You are so kind . I am terrified and so stressed.

In a few hours I will find my fate .

I hope you are well with you and everything is going according to plan.

I will let you know later on what the doctor said.

    Xxx

  • Morning V1234,

I just wanted to let you know I was thinking of you. I hope your appointment went as well as it could go.

Please know we're here for you xx

  • Hi Madgee,

I was wondering if you already have clarity in your treatment? You mentioned you were working towards treatment, so am wondering if you also already know more?

    Sending hugs xx

  • Hi there, my treatment  is outlined but have my final results on Wed.  They will be the results of Pet Scan, MRI with contrast.  I had a marker inserted in my breast on Friday.  So Wednesday  I'm back with consultant and hoping cancer is in situ and the plan remains unchanged.  Plan if no secondaries  is 18 or 20 weeks chemo and herceptin  with Herceptin  continuing for a full year. Surgery may follow Chemo.   Some days I'm OK some days  not.  Need Wednesday  out to way and a good outcome and date to start treatment.  Its hard to digest how life changing it all is but am hopeful that it's one year of my life and that is achievable.  Sending love to you how are you coping and have you any news? Stay strong lovely x

  • Sounds like you've had a very busy week! The wait for the scans remains horrible doesn't it.

Am I right to assume you also have an HER2 positive breast cancer? Because I've had pretty much the same news and treatment outlay. I found out early in the week that I'm hormone negative but HER2 positive, which meant that we will start with chemo for 6 months, then surgery (still confirmed due to the amount of DCIS in my breast around the invasive cancer) and then radiotherapy.  But also have to take Herceptin for a year. They told me this type of cancer reacts really well to chemo and the herceptin so I suppose that's a good thing. I've had my CT scan and MRI results, which we're clear but still waiting for my PET scan results which I get tomorrow. Meanwhile I've started fertility treatment, and chemo is scheduled for 22nd of Nov..

Trying not to worry too much about scan results anymore but to focus on treatment plan, but easier said than done!!

    We got this!! Xxx

  • Bless you stay positive hun.  I think we have identical diagnosis and my treatment  plan the same apart from they haven't mentioned  radiotherapy.  They also told me the Herceptin  directly targets the cancer cells and the combination  or that and chemo has amazing  results. Yes the wait is really tough and as I am 59 I'm fretting that all those little aches and pains I've had are not just getting older but realistically they probably are, it's hard to stop your thoughts running away with you.  We can do this and you are young and presumably  otherwise healthy so dont let it crush your future dreams, I won't allow it to do that. Hope IVF goes OK and will let you  know when I get my date. Holding your hand in my heart keep in touch xxxx

  • Yes they told me the same about chemo and herceptin! And I completely understand what you mean with little aches and pains, for some reason everytime I have as scan I all of a sudden feel pain everywhere. But exactly like you say don't let your thoughts run away with you.

I'm not sure if this helps you, but one of the nurses recommended this to me - I currently allow myself to think and worry about scan results etc twice a day for about 15-20 min, and then I try to park it for the rest of the day. Because I have 'worry-time' it helps me focus on other things the rest of the day.

I hope Wednesday brings you some clarity (I also have scan results Monday and Wednesday, so I'll be thinking of you) and that you'll know when you can start treatment! So many things are changing, but exactly like you said - it's a year, we can do this and we will come out stronger.

Sending positive thoughts and hugs!! xxx

  • I hope you received some good news today regarding your scans, and some clarity on dates for treatment?

Thinking of you, sending hugs! xxx

  • Hi Elvira114

Sorry for the late reply ...i think all the information started sinking in...

So I have breast cancer ,at the moment stage 1 , waiting for the 2nd tumor the results for HER2..hopefully back in a week's time.

If it is also negative I will have no chemo and only  mastectomy, reconstruction and hormone therapy. If it comes positive then chemo first and then all the rest ...

I feel scared but relived now that I know in a way what is happening.  The Dr said that hopefully I will finish with the operation before Christmas but not for definite yet..

At least I will be able to sleep a bit better tonight ..I haven't had a good night sleep for weeks .

How are you ? Have u heard anything or started treatment?  I am sos sorry if you mentioned it earlier but my brain was scrambled these last few weeks.

Thank you so so much for thinking about me ,you are so kind .

I know we will make it ! We are strong .

I hope you have a lovely evening.  Please keep in touch .

    Sending love to you xxxx

  • Hello lovely ladies I had my results today my pet scan good but have some spread in armpit so treatment starts in a couple of weeks  and following chemo breast surgery and armpit surgery and lymph removal followed by radio and herceptin for rest of year.  This is by no means a walk in the park but the relief that it's not spread into organs or bones is immense.  It feels scary but do able and I too will sleep well tonight.  I feel full of hope and optimism.  I know that's easy said with the journey ahead but there's something about knowing everything that gives control back to your life.  Sending loads of love and positive vibes to you Elvira114 and V1234.  We can do this.  Please keep me updated.  Xxxxx

  • Hi Madgee,

So good to hear from you!!!

I am so happy your PET scan came back good and has not spread into any other organs !

I did feel a lot better , after all the sleepless nights and everyday crying, when the Dr actually  told me what the treatment plan will be . It feels like a weight is off my shoulders .

Definitely a better sleep tonight Madgee and Elvira114

    Have a lovely night.

Sending lots of love to both of you.  Keep strong and positive!

    Please keep in touch xxxx

  • I'm so so pleased your scan came back clear!! I also had some spread to the lymph nodes in my armpit (I think 3 are affected) but that happens quite often apparently. Never fun to hear but like you said, the best news is no spread! It felt like I already won half the battle when I heard, so I hope you also felt a bit better after!

I completely agree with you that at least knowing all the facts relieves some of the anxiety, It think it allows you to go into fight mode. Now you know what you're dealing with, they have a plan. And yes it will be hard, but we can do this.

Do you already know when you'll start chemo? They've given me the exact same treatment, and because I'm currently going through IVF I'm scheduled to start chemo on the 22nd. I also got told yesterday that the cyst they found was indeed a cyst, the CA125 levels in my blood were normal, so no change to treatment and we still go full steam ahead :)

I hope both yourself and V1234 were able to sleep ok. Remember we got this ladies ♥
