osophagus cancer diagnosis

Hi,

I have recently been diagnosed with oesophagus cancer stage 3 and have come across this forum while googling, since the middle of September, I have had a plethora of tests and have been very well treated by the hospital staff, I’m starting my FLOT treatment in 9 days’ time a regime of 4 rounds 2 weeks apart then hopefully followed by surgery and then another FLOT regime.

  • Yyyaaaayy Mille58-

yep, YOU made it, never mind your bloke! He was nicely unconscious, while you were hopefully out there slashing....... LOL (:

ICU = mine was on there for about 36 hours. Varying degrees on here. He will be enjoying his opiates (:

    Yep, little steps going forward.
I am sooo glad the hospital saved my guy.......... I can now cheerful kill him myself............he really does need to go to back to work (: LOL

Millie - you, like me will get there.(:

  • Great news Milly!

I spent a couple of nights in ICU, being very well looked after by a whole host of angels, before being taken back to the ward. It was a surreal couple of days and for a few days on the ward - time didn't make any sense - what felt like hours could be 10 minutes, and of course they are taking tests, bloods, bp etc at all times of the day.

My "messaging" was all over the place - it could take 15 minutes to respond or even just to write a simple comment - as what I had been writing was complete rubbish - so don't worry if you get gibberish, or it takes a while.

You should be able to get the phone number for the nurses station when he is back on the ward- what my other half didn't realise was that my room was next to my nursing station, and the number of times she phoned up "after" we had communicated all concerned - it was quite funny, as she thought I was psychic when I told her off.

    Cheers

  • Hi bfg, Hilts and all in this 'club',

Thank you for your warm wishes and information! I don't know about my husband being muddled I couldn't remember my password to this site!

Yep he's still in ICU as expected and is in for the night getting spoilt by the nursing staff! He is doing well, so far so good. He's been sat in a chair and the staff have been great. I've been able to speak to him on their phone and and seemed pretty good considering everything. The surgeon believes that they've got it all and good margins. So best news possible- just typed a I instead of an o 'hello hello' lol.

Relieved doesn't cover it! He had keyhole on his abdomen and open up top. Hopefully we can FaceTime when he feels able to in a few days.

Hope you're doing OK bfg after your first FLOT and regards to all. Thanks again.

Milly who is feeling more like Mandy again!

  • Yaaayyyy,

    Excellent news Millie58.

your garden is hopefully weed free by now. Hope you have exhaled.(:

No mercy on the patients. They had my guy out in the chair the next day! Much to his disbelief and horror (: I think he thought it would be like 'carry on matron' ! LOL. Day 2 or 3 up and in the shower ......., no 'brow mopping ' stuff, but plenty of opiates (:

So now, 3/4 done , just think he will be eating probably by day 5 , I think BFG really enjoyed his 'textured chicken' as did my guy (:. I think that motivates anyone to get cracking with the eating (: Another 10 or so weeks , all done, finito. Then no doubt you will sit and look at each other and think WTF just happened.....just as we are, but as ever ,

    keeping the faith

  • Hi all,

A quick update to say my husband has moved out of ICU to the step down ward. The reason for  being a little longer in ICU was due to some 'gunge' left behind from pneumonia in 1994! This has been cleared but they monitored him in ICU. Seems so strange that I can't visit but I have to say he is constantly being assessed/seeing various professional so in between he needs his rest. So it's probably better for him as a patient and easier for the staff!

Some good news for him today was the football team he supports and is a season ticket holder (when you could go) managed to hold on and stay in the championship!

He has been a walk Hilts. Keeping the faith.

  • Good news Milly.

We are seeing the oncologist for the scan results this week-its that time now where we are not sleeping and worrying constantly! My Dad feels good and strong in himself but the fact that he cannot swallow solid foods again is what's scaring us. We have to keep positive and hope for good news.

    Lee

  • Hi Lee,

As Hilts says worrying is natural. We know in our heads it won't change anything but it's your dad and it's very hard. A positive is that he feels well and strong. The waiting is very difficult I can only advocate what Hilts said to me - distraction helps. Do things with your family or on your own.

    Keeping the faith. Thanks Hilts.

  • Great news about hubby Milly. ICU was pretty intense at the time, so I bet he's relieved to be back on the ward. Drains will start to be removed and then it's on to liquids, followed by minced and moist! I'm a WBA fan btw, so will end up watching them play your husbands team next season - probably.

Lee - thinking of you.  Nothing worse than the waiting, but feeling good and strong is definitely a plus.
