Smear: HPV positive with High Grade (severe) Dyskaryosis

After days of trawling through the internet after receiving a letter less than a week after my original smear (already having forgotten that I'd be getting my results via the post - thinking I was opening another bill) it stated that the cells found were HPV positive and that the cells found were High Grade (Severe) dyskaryosis and that if I'd like to discus this with my GP I should take the letter with me.
I also received a leaflet detailing the Coloscopy procedure and what would happen during my appointment.
I googled a lot - firstly how I'd caught HPV having already had the 3 lots of vaccination over 10 years ago... later than what they do them now as it had just become the thing...

secondly I googled High Grade (severe) dyskaryosis... as High Grade and Severe in the same sentence on an official letter made me rather concerned...  I fell out with google as it was apparent that I wasn't going to find any clarity until I'd either spoken to the GP or attended the Coloscopy - which was the following week - less than 7 days after I'd received the letter. I called the GP for a telephone appointment as I couldn't justify a reason to attend the GP for a conversation. The GP rang me back and stated he didn't have much knowledge on the subject but basically told me what I'd already read... he told me what would happen at the Coloscopy and that I'd receive treatment if I agreed when at the appointment if it was needed... so I was no more knowledgeable than prior to our conversation. So I thanked him and waited it out... not nice but it soon came around. I talked and talked and talked about it - I became nauseous and nervous but talking really helped. I had a right to be concerned but no reason to worry.
I attended the Coloscopy where she found a completely healthy cervix - no cells to be seen on the outside... NONE... having seen the images on google of a cervix with cells and looking at the screen with my Cervix I was reassured that no cells were present on the outside.
I was given the LLETS treatment as a precaution from inside my cervix as she had explained that due to me having never given birth to a baby my cervix wouldn't allow her to get in much to see what was inside (where the cells may be coming from).

I was rather reluctant at first to have the treatment as all  I could see was a healthy cervix and she had confirmed it looked that way from the outside too. To the point she even checked all my details again to ensure she had the correct results in front of her. no sex no swimming and no tampax for 4 weeks she told me... (half the reason I didn't want it done )

I'm not going to lie - three injections into your cervix is painful (or it was for me!) the treatment was over and done with before I knew it and I had the oppertunity to inspect what she had removed to be sent off when she'd placed it into a pot!) I have quite a lot of cramping - as if I'm about to experience the worst period ever - and I presume it's not all over yet. But the experience of it is and I'm grateful that it's done with.

A maximum of 4 weeks to wait to see my results but I'm confident in myself that I'm fine and it's all precautionary. Positivity and happyness is the best cure - and of anything was to come you'd need positive energy to survive. It might not work for everyone but it works for me.

I just thought I'd share as I had read some right terrorising stories and thought mine was a positive one - to give you some hope that everything is okay in the end

EDIT required... as I know it's a nightmare not knowing... everything was fine and they've said I can continue with smears as usual. I had to have one after 6 months - which came back normal and now I'm back to every three years. They have advised that if I experience any symptoms to see my GP as they would usually reccomend anyway.

hope this helps someone in that situation who is worried - it's not always a bad outcome.

stay safe

  • Hi lovely

Hopefully just to put your mind at rest. I had my letter come back as HPV+ & Severe Dyskaryosis. Had my colposcopy & lletz on the same day (2 weeks after letter came). Results came back from my lletz & it was actually only cin 1! Test of cure smear 6 months later came back as hpv- too :)

I had it explained to me like this - no system is perfect! Sometimes false or worse positives can happen. Something else could have gotten onto the slide & caused a mis reading. If they are in doubt, they grade up

They report cervical cancer & cervical canal changes differently on letters

I would put money on you being totally fine & nothing to worry about! X

  • Hi all, I have been going out of my mind in the same position, so thank you for sharing your experiences, it has really helped.

I had high grade severe results a few weeks ago, having never had abnormal results. I went for my colposcopy expecting to have the LLETZ under local anaesthetic but was told it was a large area and I also had some lesions so it had to be done under general anaesthetic. This worried me even more and had it done 2 weeks later. That was middle of August and just found out today that there is a discrepancy, the biopsy and lesions were all low grade, not high grade as the smear suggested. This is going to be mentioned in their next meeting in a few weeks' time so I guess no further treatment is needed, the letter does not mention any further treatment. Although there was a discrepancy, I am feeling relieved that it is all done and is low grade.

  • Hello lovely

And your post has also made me feel better again so thank you for sharing! It's just one of the things that can happen unfortunately. But i suppose it's best to be overtreated & ok than undertreated & have potential future risks

My cervix does however feel very different now. Even 9 months after, it feels bumpy. But again just one of those things i suppose

I'd love to know what your MDT meeting results are when you get them?

My discrepancy went to MDT & nothing changed. But was still good to know they investigated it

    x

  • Aww thank you, I wasn't expecting any replies, just wanted to share my experience, it seems a lot of women are in the same boat, worrying after getting abnormal results.

I totally agree, I don't think my treatment would have been any different, I am just relieved that although there is a discrepancy then hopefully no further treatment is needed.

Good that your results were investigated and no further treatment was needed.

Yes I will definitely let you know the results of their meeting, it will be in a few weeks' time.

    Thank you, take care x

  • Thank you for all of your posts.

I have received the same letter just today. I called the cervical screening team and they informed me that they are booking in people referred from April at the moment . But then she took my details, passed me straight onto another lady on the team and she said that they have booked me an appointment for next week, so now my head is spinning! Must be urgent if they have booked me an appointment within a week of me being referred, or is this normal?!?

I lost my dad to cancer last year and have 2 young boys, I'm now thinking the worst and can't stop thinking about it.

  • Hi there

Please try not to worry about the speed of your appointment, and consider that it’s a good thing to get an appointment quickly-perhaps they had a cancellation next week and that freed an appointment space up.

High grade dyskariosis is NOT cancer-the smear has identified that you have precancerous cells, and It’s likely with high grade you will need to have them removed, but this is a simple procedure where the results are sent for biopsy to confirm that all the abnormal cells have been removed, and you would return for a smear in six months.

Please don’t spend time thinking the worst and contemplating cancer: the whole point of the cervical screening programme is to catch abnormal cells early, long before they would ever turn to cancer, and this is what it has done it your case. All the best for your appointment.

  • Thank you very much for your response. It is very easy to jump to the worst case scenario but this is reassuring to hear. X

  • Just wanted to share my story also. Came across this post when Googling the two above things hoping to get others experience.

2 years ago I had my first abnormal smear, granted I was overdue one for a few years >< Now I wish I had attended!

I went in for a colposcopy and between my smear and the colposcopy I had fallen pregnant with a planned pregnancy. They checked and saw I had cin2, and asked if they could do a biopsy but I declined due to being pregnant. They arranged for me to come in a few weeks after I had given birth for a biopsy. Fast forward to that date, had my biopsy which....I couldnt feel a thing, im guessing as I had just given birth and numb cervix etc. It came back high grade & high risk HPV so I was booked in to have a LLETZ 2 weeks later.

6 month usual checkup came around, abnormal cells had come back. They arranged for me to have a cold coagulation as they only showed mild abnormalities. Still worried me as, I thought the LLETZ had removed all abnormal cells. I went back for this appointment, I had another consultant, who had a chat with me, said I also had cervical stenosis, and if I wished to have anymore children, to which I responded yes. He said that another treatment would worsen the stenosis (narrowing of the cervix) and as my cells were just mild, I could put off my treatment for another 6 months which I did.

So within those few months, I was desperately trying for a baby, worrying that if the cells worsened in those months, it would rule out me completing my family. We were successful =) Went to my 6 month checkup again, where another smear was taken and colposcopy done. Consultant said at the time that it looked ok, but obviously couldnt do much due to me being pregnant.
Went away thinking yay, its ok! Somehow...its gotten better!

Then.....2 weeks after (well now) I have received a letter from the hopsital saying that the lab results came back showing high grade dyskaryosis and high risk HPV. So this is now TWO pregnancies where I have had low grade at the start, and then several months into my pregnancy it has sped up to a cin2 and cin3 (with current one) which is obviously very worrying.  They are also changing me from 6 month checkups to monthly checkups as of next week.

All I can think is the HPV is causing these abnormal cells to keep reappearing, and somehow pregnant hormones are speeding them up? I dont know.... Everyone keeps telling me not to worry but thats a little hard.

  • Thanks so much for this! I just got the exact same letter HPV positive and severe dyskariosis. Going to have my Colposcopy Monday PM and it is quite daunting esp when you see symptoms. how was the colposcopy? And what can they find during the colposcopy? And how long does it take for biopsy results? :)

  • I got letter say I have severe dyskaryosis from my smear test

so I got hospital appt in 2 week time I am really scared I have 3 kids of mine

    I'm too young I don't know how it's caught
