Smear: HPV positive with High Grade (severe) Dyskaryosis

After days of trawling through the internet after receiving a letter less than a week after my original smear (already having forgotten that I'd be getting my results via the post - thinking I was opening another bill) it stated that the cells found were HPV positive and that the cells found were High Grade (Severe) dyskaryosis and that if I'd like to discus this with my GP I should take the letter with me.
I also received a leaflet detailing the Coloscopy procedure and what would happen during my appointment.
I googled a lot - firstly how I'd caught HPV having already had the 3 lots of vaccination over 10 years ago... later than what they do them now as it had just become the thing...

secondly I googled High Grade (severe) dyskaryosis... as High Grade and Severe in the same sentence on an official letter made me rather concerned...  I fell out with google as it was apparent that I wasn't going to find any clarity until I'd either spoken to the GP or attended the Coloscopy - which was the following week - less than 7 days after I'd received the letter. I called the GP for a telephone appointment as I couldn't justify a reason to attend the GP for a conversation. The GP rang me back and stated he didn't have much knowledge on the subject but basically told me what I'd already read... he told me what would happen at the Coloscopy and that I'd receive treatment if I agreed when at the appointment if it was needed... so I was no more knowledgeable than prior to our conversation. So I thanked him and waited it out... not nice but it soon came around. I talked and talked and talked about it - I became nauseous and nervous but talking really helped. I had a right to be concerned but no reason to worry.
I attended the Coloscopy where she found a completely healthy cervix - no cells to be seen on the outside... NONE... having seen the images on google of a cervix with cells and looking at the screen with my Cervix I was reassured that no cells were present on the outside.
I was given the LLETS treatment as a precaution from inside my cervix as she had explained that due to me having never given birth to a baby my cervix wouldn't allow her to get in much to see what was inside (where the cells may be coming from).

I was rather reluctant at first to have the treatment as all  I could see was a healthy cervix and she had confirmed it looked that way from the outside too. To the point she even checked all my details again to ensure she had the correct results in front of her. no sex no swimming and no tampax for 4 weeks she told me... (half the reason I didn't want it done )

I'm not going to lie - three injections into your cervix is painful (or it was for me!) the treatment was over and done with before I knew it and I had the oppertunity to inspect what she had removed to be sent off when she'd placed it into a pot!) I have quite a lot of cramping - as if I'm about to experience the worst period ever - and I presume it's not all over yet. But the experience of it is and I'm grateful that it's done with.

A maximum of 4 weeks to wait to see my results but I'm confident in myself that I'm fine and it's all precautionary. Positivity and happyness is the best cure - and of anything was to come you'd need positive energy to survive. It might not work for everyone but it works for me.

I just thought I'd share as I had read some right terrorising stories and thought mine was a positive one - to give you some hope that everything is okay in the end

EDIT required... as I know it's a nightmare not knowing... everything was fine and they've said I can continue with smears as usual. I had to have one after 6 months - which came back normal and now I'm back to every three years. They have advised that if I experience any symptoms to see my GP as they would usually reccomend anyway.

hope this helps someone in that situation who is worried - it's not always a bad outcome.

stay safe

  • Yeah mine 3 years ago was normal. Then in years gone to serve high grade.
wenf for the colopspy, they removed the cells then and there, didn't hurt slightly uncomfortable.

but now I have to wait four weeks for them to test the cells to they have removed to make sure it was just serve cells and that they have removed it all.

I was very scared thinking the worst and even after my appointment felt awful. But I've read lots of forums with people who have had the same and it was fine once removed. So I'm just keeping a positive mind set now still have 3 weeks for my results.
My appointment had no delays intact I was offered a cancellation which was only 3 days after finding out.
the hospital was hot on covid 2 temperature checks but others were there for their appointments.
They actually said they have had more cancellations due to people worrying about coming in, so I wouldn't have though would be any delays.
    hope all is well. X

  • Thanks for the reply .

Fingers crossed there isn't too much of a wait. That's the worst bit, the waiting. I remember first time round of having the colposcopy that I googled so much just with the low grade.

What with covid and hearing stories of people missing treatment it just fills me with the worst.

Google can and can't be your friend in these scenarios, cant it?!

Let me know how you get on.

  • Thank you.
they just rang me. All the cells have been removed with a clear margin. They were high grade serve pre cancerous cells but she said all was removed. The doctor did admit she was concerned at the time that they were cancerous but the biopsy has showed it's CIN3 which I'm so relieved about. She said she doesn't normally ring but as I was very worried at the time she did.
so greatful she did has relaxed me.
she said it will still got to a meeting where they will discuss when they will discuss if they want me to re do the lettz treatment to be extra safe or if I will just got back in 6 months for another smear.
hope you are feeling ok, and I'm sure everything will be fine for you as well xx

  • That's really good to hear. I've got my colposcopy appointment on Tuesday for high grade moderate and HPV positive. Really nervous about it and just keep thinking the worst but glad to hear that some good news can come from it!!

  • I just got a letter today saying HPV positive with High Grade (severe) Dyskaryosis and I'm freaking out a bit. I'm 32 and have always had normal smears. No mention of HPV before, and I've had the smears regularly so my last was 3 years ago. Concerned that three years ago it was fine and now it's severe... When I had the smear the nurse said everything looked fine but I don't know if that means anything... Hope I get the colposcopy appointment  soon and it's not too sore :/

    Hope yours goes well!

  • Hi

I'm 35 and in the same situation. My smear 3 years ago was normal and I have just received a letter the same as yours with HPV and severe changes .
just came as a shock feel all over the place .  From what I have read these changes can take many years to turn to cancer but still so scared and just don't know what to do with myself.
    hope your ok

  • Hi,

im 29 I've just had my results back and again it says high grade severe I'm so worried because I had an eptopic pregnancy last year and they said they then also had to laser some of my cervix  away no reason was given but I assumed all was ok, I had my test last week got results and letter today for a colonoscopy which is next week ive had loads of tests with my cervix in the past due to endometriosis so worried why this wasn't picked up on sooner. I'm so worried but reading this had eased my mind a little.

  • Thank you for sharing your story.  I received my smear results today and they are exactly what you have stated above.  I have lived on google today trying to find something to drop me worrying.  I have 2 daughters 6 and 3 and have a 5 month old baby boy.  I feel sick with worry.
did you get your results back.  I've read many stories of people actually having rhe coloscopy but cannot see any positive results back from any biopsy taken,

Thank you and hope you're well xx

  • Hiya, my letter received today is exactly the same.  I am sick with worry and on google overdrive.

hope all was ok for you xx

  • Hi there - I am in the same situation you were in (high grade/severe + HPV), but no abnormal cells seen at colposcopy (assumed to be type 3 transformation zone).

I'm struggling to find many women in this situation and wanted to ask how your results were? Keeping everything crossed.

    Thanks so much. X
