Operation in a few hours to remove lower left lobe of lung

writing this whilst unable to sleep, not surprising as I have my operation in a few hours to remove the lower left lobe of my lung

  • Hi Maurs, just wondered how you’re getting on a week after getting home? I had the same procedure as you on Tuesday and got home last night. I’m doing ok but struggling with stairs a bit and the breathlessness.

    Best wishes

  • Hi all,

Just an update to say I got home yesterday afternoon after 6 days in hospital including the day of the operation. It was great to get home!

I feel comfortable and utterly relieved that my cough has gone.

I can walk around the house very well but going upstairs leaves me a bit breathless for a few minutes.

Hope you are all still doing well.

  • Great news that you're home Joy and sounds like you are doing really well! I'm the same with the stairs. I made it out for lunch yesterday for my birthday and again with another friend today which was great.

    Have a lovely Christmas.

    Best wishes

  • Hi All

I am new to the forum and finding it really helpful. I was diagnosed with lung cancer last month and I am due to have upper right lobe removed on 23rd December. It is very reassuring to hear how well you are all doing. The advice about the recliner chair is good. I will use mine.

Anyway, I hope you all have a good Christmas.

  • Hi All

Vicky, sorry to hear you are also facing this,  but glad you are being helped by our messages and wishing you all the best for your operation. Let us know how things go.

Just wanted to say that I’ve got a wedge shaped pillow which seems to be perfect in my bed with a normal pillow on top. I’m about to embark on the second night with it.

Ruth, fab that you are “ lunching” and got to enjoy your birthday properly,

Happy Christmas to both of you

  • Hi Vicky

The forum is great isn't it, I found it really helpful and everyone's so supportive and understanding. Will be thinking about you on the 23rd. Let us know how it all goes and best wishes for your recovery.

I didn't have a recliner chair but found I was ok sleeping in bed but with 3 pillows.

PS - I have found the comfiest, supportive vest tops - Sloggi zero feel vest tank top, no ridges that irritate your wounds, I got it in nude and black.

  • Morning Ruth and Joy

Thanks for the advice re wedge pillow and sloggi vests.  So, a bit more shopping to do!  I've bought a couple of Theya healthcare bras already. I've tried one out for the day and they are really comfy.

  • Thanks Joy. How are you doing? I got my stitches (from my drain wound) out this afternoon, nurse said all 3 wounds look to be healing well, which was good to hear.
You have a lovely Christmas too. We're going away tomorrow for a week, I'd booked a big house months ago for both our families to get together but started to doubt I'd be able to go, but I feel able and will just need to take it easy.

    Take care

  • Hi Ruth,

Fantastic that you are able to go away for Christmas as planned and with the families! Perfect after your ordeal.

I know you will be careful not to overdo it.. I’m finding that too much chatting can exhaust me!

I am doing well but I have got a bit of a cough today and coughing is very difficult because it’s painful for me so I’m hoping that I can manage to cough something up and that will stop it!

I had an outing in the car with my husband this afternoon. We went to a car showroom to look at a new car for me, which was great, but even doing that was very tiring and after half an hour I couldn't wait to get home! Still, it was a step forwards do nice to go out when the destination wasn’t a hospital!

My two dogs came home yesterday ( they went to my friend while I was in hospital and for a couple of days after I got back ) and it is great to have them home.

I’ m having the drain wound stitches out on 27th December and I have received an appointment for an X- ray and a consultation with my surgeon on Christmas Eve. I have to have the X- Ray because of possible complications of the pneumonectomy and they need to check the fluid in my lung space. She will have the histology and lymph node biopsy results and tell me about seeing an oncologist I guess because she’s already said I’m going to have to have it.  So I’m going to have to brace myself, but in the meantime I’m going to have a lovely quiet weekend and focus on my recovery and feeling so much better than I did before the operation!

    Have a great Christmas

  • Hi Joy, glad you've got your dogs home and that you managed out today, what new car are you fancying? On a practical note about driving, I'm not clear from the DVLA site if we need to let them know about our surgery, are you? Know it'll be a few weeks before we can drive. It's one of my questions for my appt with surgeon, which isn't until 3rd Jan.

I'm trying not to think too much about it but I'll find out then jf I need chemo, if the tumour was >4cm and/or anything found in the lymph node samples. Whatever the outcome I do feel stronger for dealing with whatever is required, we just have to don't we... I don't know about you but I still sometimes can't believe what I've been through and coped with this past few weeks and I'm so grateful for all of the support and a bit overwhelmed by all of the lovely cards, gifts, flowers and messages.

I hope your cough improves, maybe try putting your face over a bowl of boiling water with a towel over your head, the steam may help loosen things up?

Enjoy your relaxing weekend and please do let me know how you get on, on the 24th and 27th.

    Best wishes
