Treatment choices for T2 localised prostate cancer

Hello everyone

so, I’ve just joined the club and been told I have T2 localised prostrate Cancer. My Gleason score is 7.

I am a very fit and active 57 year old with no ongoing medical conditions.

having read through and understood the different types of treatment available to me, I now have questions that I would like to put to people who have had treatment and have, or have not experienced the wide range of potentially side effects.

i know the NHS has to highlight all the risks that can be attached to the respective treatments, but I’d love to hear from real people.

because I am incredibly fortunate to be told my cancer is isolated to my prostrate and has not spread, the choice of treatment is mine.

matching my criteria to these methods, the best for me appears to be the Seed implants which radiate for several months. This method is a one off minor Op, same day stay.

So, my questions for those men who have a similar diagnosis to myself and have the seed implants,  are:

Did you experience urine leakage, and if so how much and how long did it last for, or is it long term.

Did you have any Bowel side effects and if so, what were they and have they died off?

Have you suffered from any Erectial problems?

Have you found it uncomfortable to ejaculate ?

Did you loose your ‘mojo’ during and after treatment?

Id love to hear anything feedback, good or bad, or indeed if you choose another treatment and why.

Thanks in advance and the best of luck to you all

Cullen

  • Hi Cullen and welcome to Cancer Chat.

I know our lovely [@telemando]‍ had the same diagnosis as you and I think I've seen [@David1949]‍ discussing implants on the forum before so I'm hoping they will be able to help but it may be worth popping on Prostate Cancer UK's forum to see if anyone there has been down this route as well.

Wishing you all the best with your treatment Cullen.

    Kind regards,

  • I've sent you a friend request so we can chat privately.

  • Hi there

i have accepted friend request. Thanks

  • Hi Cullen,

Sorry to hear you have the disease, I too am very fit and active though my situation is apparently not so good, but I continue to keep fit and active, contrary to the wishes of my oncologist.  The implant I have had is Goserelina (Casodex), as they call it in Portugal, unfortunately it has a lot of side effects, is probably not appropriate for you, and is not working for me.

Steph mentioned that I maybe a useful contact, but I have no experience of the seed implants, my treatment has been hormone therapy, chemotherapy and cortisone.  You mention there are other options available to you, does this include a prostatectomy?

I have read, as no doubt you have, that the success with seed implants has been very good, however if the intention is to also inclusde hormone therapy, maybe prostatectomy will be the better solution for the long term?

Whatever your decision I have no doubt that maintaining physical fitness will provide you with the stamina; emotional, mental and physical, to overcome whatever challenges are ahead.

    Best wishes,

    David

  • Hi David

Thank you so much for taking the time to feedback. As you say, it does seem that your treatment is somewhat different to the one I believe I will choose. We are all different and I gets what works for one person does not necessarily mean it will work for another. I guess the same goes for side effects as well.

i am prepared for side effects as I will balance the inconveniences of the side effects versus treatment success. I have a meeting this coming week with the Oncologist, so I’m keen to see if he agrees with my initial choice.

i sincerely hope you beat this awful battle David. You sound like a positive and healthy person, so I know you will win. All the very best my friend.
