Is this employee lying about stage 2 kidney cancer?

Hi there,

I feel like the worst person in the world for doubting, but I have a strong suspicion that an employee in my company is lying about having kidney cancer. For clarity sake I’m the HR manager and his own manager and I suspect the same thing...

I have experienced many different cancers over the years including my sister’s cervical cancer which thankfully is in remission for over 10 years. There is something about this guy’s story which does not add up. To give some context this guy has been a problematic employee over the years he has been with us and has frequent absences.

His manager met with him upon hearing the news of his cancer and offered him support including counselling services paid for by the company. His manager then met me and we discussed what other supports we could offer. When I asked the manager about his treatment plan she said that he reported to her that he was taking tablets but he did not elaborate. From my own research I understand that sometimes stage 1 is monitored rather than taking a surgical or medical approach. However stage 2 normally requires surgery. The employee has said to us he does not require surgery and that the tablets are helping.

The employee took some time off work last week and as is standard practice we asked him to produce a medical certificate and none has been forthcoming. He says he can’t afford to see his doctor and that he is struggling to afford his treatment - Here in Ireland all cancer treatments are free so I don’t know why this would be the case. He could also call his doctor and ask for a certificate especially if he has a long term condition.

As I said I feel terrible suspecting this, but my gut is telling me that he is lying!

  • I know when I was diagnosed with prostate cancer nearly 10 years ago and I needed time off for surgery, my GP provided me with a series of sick notes, clearly explaining that I had prostate cancer.

I don't think it's all unreasonable to ask for a sick note if the guy is taking time off.

However, just a word of caution. If he doesn't have cancer then he may have a mental condition that's making him do this.

  • Thanks for the reply,

Yes I would wonder about the mental state of someone’s who would tell a lie like this!

When asked for medical certificates he flew into a rage! I’m thinking we might send him to our company doctor - I don’t want to do this and I’d feel awful if the guy is genuine but I really don’t think he is.

  • Hi there ...

Agree with telemando... I think there's deff something else , he sounds like he's getting angry when asked for evidence ... and you sound amazingly supportive .. so yes I'd do some homework to find the truth ...

But like telemando says ... a huge word of caution ... if he gets found out and confronted , it could tip him over the edge if he is suffering from mental illness... so maybe then get some advice .. on how to go about it ..  but you deff need the truth ...   Chrissie x
