Hi there,
I feel like the worst person in the world for doubting, but I have a strong suspicion that an employee in my company is lying about having kidney cancer. For clarity sake I’m the HR manager and his own manager and I suspect the same thing...
I have experienced many different cancers over the years including my sister’s cervical cancer which thankfully is in remission for over 10 years. There is something about this guy’s story which does not add up. To give some context this guy has been a problematic employee over the years he has been with us and has frequent absences.
His manager met with him upon hearing the news of his cancer and offered him support including counselling services paid for by the company. His manager then met me and we discussed what other supports we could offer. When I asked the manager about his treatment plan she said that he reported to her that he was taking tablets but he did not elaborate. From my own research I understand that sometimes stage 1 is monitored rather than taking a surgical or medical approach. However stage 2 normally requires surgery. The employee has said to us he does not require surgery and that the tablets are helping.
The employee took some time off work last week and as is standard practice we asked him to produce a medical certificate and none has been forthcoming. He says he can’t afford to see his doctor and that he is struggling to afford his treatment - Here in Ireland all cancer treatments are free so I don’t know why this would be the case. He could also call his doctor and ask for a certificate especially if he has a long term condition.
As I said I feel terrible suspecting this, but my gut is telling me that he is lying!
