Diagnosed breast cancer but feeling OK - am I odd?

Hello,

Initial diagnosis just RHS breast at stage 2 but grade 3 so having chemo pre surgery, 1st EC on 29th August, awaiting CT, bone scan & biopsy on LHS, results due 21st August.  Had really quick & excellent treatment compared to many plus am a stoic/daft Yorkshire lass who is ready for an adventure (although I can think of better ones!!)

Been looking at the forums more so for practical advice re what to expect re chemo, what I should be doing re diet, questions to ask the cancer team who are supporting me.

Told all family & close friends and set up a whatsapp group so they know what I am doing, so far enjoying this as it’s an opportunity for all to be entertained as well as not having to have the same bl00dy conversation over & over. Definitely decided against face book as they're not close & I know it would be filled with motivational quotes - not what I am after at all.

Hopefully there are some other people out there who are feeling relatively positive, in the meantime am off to Edinburgh fringe this weekend to watch some very odd shows - whoop, whoop!

  • Hi Szm

  • Hello there

Apologies for radio silence, still here!

After a lovely weekend woke up feeling pants on Monday, which progressed to high temp and A&E. Get me!!

Have felt fine throughout despite odd things happening in body. As you can imagine the lovely nursing staff have more than tired of me by now so am being chucked out this evening..YAY!

Now looking forward to round 2 next thurs.

Nel am very jealous you're doing SO well.

    Varnint, Patrice

I do hope you're also well.

    Sam x

  • Sorry for the silence ladies, I have been doing really well, had the syringe driver on for 5 days due to very bad sickness in the first 24 hours and other than tiredness I am feeling great!

Ive been taking whestgrass shots and Hemp shots (Kama Hemp) and I swear that’s why I’m ok x

Some of my hair started to come out in the shower this morning, so *** about to get real!

hope you are ok Sam and ladies xx

  • Hi Sam

I'm so lucky things are moving so quickly, had biopsy yesterday and PET scan booked for 24th (some delay in checking I could have it while on steroids then the biopsy but still not long)

So far things are looking favourable, no sign of spread and contained to bottom of lung, I'm eternally grateful for the doctor I saw spotting these rare symptoms and acting on them. Still have to wait for full diagnosis but I'm still feeling ok with it all although my jokes aren't always appreciated amongst friends and family :-)

Hope your treatment is going ok x

    Take care

  • Sorry for radio silence, busy week last week (in a good way..more later).

    Patrice

Post hospital visit suspect am on the same syringe , mine is GCSF, hopefully will now remain at home throughout this cycle, despite hospital being a generally enjoyable experience would rather be at home this time plus think the nurses that I talked to (I.e. annoyed) would revolt!

My hair has also been deserting my body, under carriage down below departed over a week ago, think armpit hair has also gone same way and chin is decidedly less Brian blessed than it used to be, however over last few days head hair is moulting quite a lot. Am lucky have really thick hair so am able to cover up the one small bald patch I have noticed but still a little worrying , hopefully the cold cap will mean I don't lose it all but what will be will be.

Makes a change when my hair contributes more to the dyson than the furry cats does!

    Hope yours calms down..

Glad to hear you're in a better position and that the lung cancer is contained, must be a weight of your mind. V impressed you're managing to annoy your nearest and dearest with a quality sense of humour...keep it up! If it gets bad I always find the 'I am ill you know' card works quite effectively.

    Praise

Feeling great still thanks, glad you're still being a super-woman! Keep it up.

So busy week with pre assessment for PORT fitting last week which am desperately in need of given it is taking about 4 attempts to take or give fluids of late, feel sorry for the nurses more than my bruised hands and arms.

Unfortunately am a carrier of MSSA (cousin of MRSA) so am having to shower and wash hair in delightful red gunk (this will not help moulting head at all I suspect!) as well as shove stuff up my nose 3 times a day...and all this on top of a challenging timetable ( as am sure you all have/ will have) of anti sickness, steroids, anti biotics...and blame the chemo brain for making me more disorganised than ever...what a challenge. I have alarms going off every couple of hours reminding me I need to so something...what fun!

2nd blood test and chemo also week just gone, all went well. And was lucky to be joined by northern pal so had a good couple of nights out and a chemo pal, who learnt quite a lot about the chemo ritual, lucky her?

Feeling good today, much better than EC no 1 when thought it would be good to have a takeaway pizza following EC, one of my worst decisions ever. Can't face pizza or alcohol currently, am eating like a very healthy person ( was previously a glutton), and eating healthily and getting out & about (taking a tip out of praise's book!) has resulted in some  much needed weight loss, there had to be some good coming out of this chemo nonsense after all ( in addition to defeating cancer of course).

Have PORT fitting tues a.m. So will see how that goes and then Friday MRI to see how that naughty cancer is responding, and hopefully a haircut Thursday if there's and still some left. Told the hairdresser he'd better be super gentle or I'd not be a very good advert leaving the salon bald!!

Good luck all and hope you carry on well

  • Hi there,

So sorry I didn't get on here sooner. Between being back at work (phased return still) after best part of a year off, also having major surgery recently, and starting up a project for cancer patients in Jersey I've barely been on here. Been missing it and all the ladies I've met on here.

It's not strange to feel fine. I was already stage 3c when I was diagnosed and I had no symptoms at all. Admittedly in the previous two years I'd had lots of unusual (for me) infections. I'd had cellulitis from a mozzie bite, both my colds turned into pneumonia and pleurisy and I'd had breathing problems. That was strange for me so should maybe have hinted to my doctors that there was something serious lurking in the background.

Hope you enjoyed the Fringe. I came home from Jersey for it a few years ago as my friend (an Australian comedian) was doing a show at it.

Also hope chemo is going well?

  • Hi Sam

So delighted to have been read from you after a good silence .also glad that you feel better than EC .I had my chem on  last friday the 13th oh as usual first week is tiring where the mind has to be above the feeling to say I will be ok.this time was nausea where could smell drug out of my nose  but was manageable,  didn't vomit at all just struggle and 8th day felt better like human being , taste buds improved on same day!!! What a battle but I say to cancer I will defeat you in Jesus name.

On Thursday day before chemo had port fitting trial where my veins were very shy ha ha ha ,nurse tried as soon as a line is tried it collapsed,  tried scanning another one as soon as she apply anaesthetic it shrank .shame nurse was even unhappy than myself,  I ring tomorrow monday see if I can get another attempt, yes I nee, the hand I used on 1st veins are sometimes painful and dark dont want to damage them all.

Am glad you are health eater now , as for me am surprised I did loose wait before treatment commenced but now I tell you I have added weight but still very little carbs 5% a week.my sister in law visited me yesterday,  she was laughing while joking that where is a patient? I cant see patient on here, ha ha she said you look well is like joke that you are on chemotherapy. I just said God is in control!!

I wish you well Sam.on 4th I go for my last treatment for this drug then will change to another one which I will go every week.I put fear behind and courage ahead whatever it will be I will still win the battle.

Have a good rest, sleep and relaxed mood & moments

Hi! You sound like a very busy lady, very impressive.  And am still feeling fine (and odd at the same time).

I too had some strange things going on for a number of months before being officially diagnosed.  Being a stoic northerner I either ignored them or docs failed to make connection (let's face it, it would be miraculous to do so in most cases I suspect).

Chemo is going well so far thanks, its quite an experience indeed!

  • Nel,

Oooh chemo on Friday the 13th...no wonder you got some side effects eh?

What's a port fitting trial - pre-assessment maybe?  I had my port fitted Tuesday and its still a little sore and makes me feel a bit like frankenstein's monster but went well and will prevent, as you have, those naughty elusive veins from misbehaving, the nurses will be a lot happier and my arms won't look like I've been battered!

Am still feeling fine post 2nd EC, am only really tired when I wake up at daft o'clock (4 a.m. on Weds for example), otherwise am being quite productive working and getting out & about or attempting to bake (mixed success so far).

I'm with your sister re how you appear, are you sure they're giving the right chemo in the right area?  I've actually managed to lose 1/2 stone so far, not through actively trying, just through moving more & eating healthily...its not rocket science is it?  Although apparently losing a lot of weight is not a good idea when on chemo so may come a time when need to drink neat lard (let's hope not though eh).

Off for MRI later this morning to see if that naughty hamster has also been on a diet!  Keep on being well.

    Sam X
