Hi new to this

I've recently been diagnosed with MCC after having a scan on a lump on my arm they said it was a cyst but after the GP removed it and sent it for tests it came back as positive cancer and I'm trying to process it before I tell my wife when she gets home

  • Hello Ian1976

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently been diagnosed with a Merkel cell carcinoma. It's understandable that this might have been overwhelming news to be given, especially as you initially were told that it was a cyst.

MCC is a rare type of cancer,  with around 360 people diagnosed with MCC in England each year. It has become more common in the UK over the last 20 years, so hopefully you will be able to connect with someone else who has had an MCC soon.

I can see that  posted a message last year about having treatment for MCC, and  has also previously posted about having MCC. As I've tagged them in to my message here, they may get a notification and pop by to say hello and share their experiences with you.

Hopefully, you won't have to wait too long to see the dermatology specialist, and they will be able to confirm if it was all removed with clear margins by your GP. They may want to do some further testing and/or treatment to make sure that clear margins have been obtained and that there are no other areas of concern, but try not to worry about this. I know this is easier said than done, but worrying won't change things, and it will leave you feeling worse in the meantime.

Cancer can be a difficult topic to talk about, and it's understandable that you might be feeling worried about how to tell your wife and loved ones about this news. There is no right or wrong way. I'd really encourage you to talk with them sooner rather than later. That way, they can support you through this process and attend any appointments that you might want them to come to.

If it would hel pto chat things through with one of our nurses, then you're most welcome to give them a call. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can. They're available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

Keep in touch Ian1976 and let us know how you get on. We're here for you.

    Best wishes,
