Just been diagnosed with Barrett’s Oesophagus

Hi, I’m 53 years old and after struggling to swallow over the last 12 months plus suffering with long term acid reflux I finally went to see my GP who referred me to the hospital. I have had 3 endoscopy appointments and oesophageal dilation in December and my most recent appointment in January has shown signs of Barrett’s Oesophagus. I am awaiting biopsy results but this is a condition I have never heard of and I wondered if anyone else has been diagnosed with this.

  • Hi Donna,

This may seem a weird thing to say but that diagnosis is a relatively good thing. Barratt’s can be a precursor to cancer, so you have been diagnosed before anything sinister has developed and you’re now in the system and will be subject to regular checks.

CRUK have long campaigned for earlier diagnosis - as the earlier cancer is detected, the better the outcomes tend to be.

    Good luck!
