Just been diagnosed with Barrett’s Oesophagus

Hi, I’m 53 years old and after struggling to swallow over the last 12 months plus suffering with long term acid reflux I finally went to see my GP who referred me to the hospital. I have had 3 endoscopy appointments and oesophageal dilation in December and my most recent appointment in January has shown signs of Barrett’s Oesophagus. I am awaiting biopsy results but this is a condition I have never heard of and I wondered if anyone else has been diagnosed with this.

  • Hello DonnaMY

I'm sorry to hear that you've been having some health concerns and that as a result of investigations you've now been diagnsoed with Barret's Oesophagus. It's understandable that you might have questions and concerns about what this could mean for you in the future.

There are lots of posts on the forum from people who have been given this diagnosis. You can read through some of these by using the forum search function at the top of the page but I can see that  recently posted to share her story about diagnosis and posted in our Ask the Nurses topic area about having a recent diagnosis. Hopefully you will be able to connect with other members who have  Barrett's oesophagus soon.

I've linked the informarion availableon the Cancer Resarch UK website for you above but you might also like to have a look at the Guts UK! website.

If it would hel pto talk things through with one of our nurses you're most welcome to give them a call. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

Hopefully you won't have to wait too long for the biopsy results DonnaMY and the hospital team will be able to give you some answers and reassurance.

Do let us know how you get on.
