Newly diagnosed with Myeloma

I started Chemo on 1st December I know everyone reacts differently but I wondered if there is a pattern with regard to starting to have side effects i.e. sickness/nausea. Is it within days or half way through 1st 4 week period or does it happen when on 2nd Chemo treatment.

Also the plan is to have 4 months of Chemo injections and drugs at hospital and at home, then to go into hospital (bedsit in hospital grounds) for a month and have intensive chemo and Stem cell treatment.  Could someone who has been through this give an idea of what to expect during and afterwards when back home. It sounds quite scary and lonely. Are visitors allowed bearing in mind infection control.

  • Hello Suzie-W,

How have you been feeling 5 days after starting chemotherapy? As you said, everyone reacts differently and I am not sure if there is a standard pattern when it comes to developing side effects like sickness or nausea. We have an in-depth section on our website on chemotherapy  and in particular on side effects of chemotherapy but I would actually strongly recommend you give our cancer nurses a call on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their helpline is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm as they may be able to tell you more about this.

We also have useful information on myeloma and on treatment for myeloma and I hope that you will hear from others on here who have been through this treatment plan before and that they can give you an idea as to what to expect based on their personal experiences. Other members of our community have been in your position before and I thought I would mention a few that you might want to connect with here.  posted this myeloma thread and they were looking at the time to reach out to others who had been diagnosed with myeloma and had the STEM harvester procedure. There's another myeloma thread by  which might be of interest to you and you are welcome to respond to if you wish.  mentioned too in their myeloma thread having a stem cell transplant in January 2024 and this thread on myeloma expectations by  is also an interesting one as this member was at the time looking to hear about other myeloma patients' treatment journeys. These are just a few examples and there are many more and if you type the keyword 'myeloma' in our forum search which is at the top of the page, you will see other possible relevant threads.

I hope your treatment goes well with minimal side effects and that you will get to talk to others on here who have been through each step of the same myeloma treatment.

Best wishes and best of luck with the remaining chemotherapy treatments,

    Lucie, Cancer Chat Moderator
