Diagnosis of prostate cancer in the family

Hello,

I was doing a search and came across this forum so thought I'd sign up.

My dad has prostate cancer. He first took a course of hormone tablets, then Thursday was his first radiotherapy session.

The radiologists/radiographers were so lovely on Thursday. It was like a kind of calm in all the chaos in a way because it just felt quite reassuring. My dad had a bit of an off day yesterday into last night and into the early hours of this morning, but things seem to have calmed down for now.

Today's been a rough day for me. I said something like that on a mental health forum and it felt odd to say that when it's my dad thats going through it all and the treatment. I know those close to those with cancer goes through different emotions too but today it just felt odd. I'd heard how anxious dad was last night and I could not relax myself. Eventually I'd only got about three hours sleep after I got quite upset. I'm quite an anxious person anyway and l overthink a lot, so there's a lot going on...

That's it for now, I think.

  • Hi can I ask what age is your dad .? I went through the same treatment just over 3 years ago I was 65 then . I was lucky  my prostate cancer was caught early and the hormone and Radiotherapy treatment was 100%  suscessful . Hopefully your dad's treatment will go well.

  • Hello, my dad is 77. He was told that it is very treatable and one even said that it was the "best" cancer to have for his age. I was a bit surprised at that when mum told me but hey ho. My dad's cancer seems to have been caught early. He only went to the doctors after he thought he was going to the loo more often. I'd said to my mum that I thought that was just him, but clearly my dad thought he went more often still. Cancer never came across his mind. He thought a blood test he'd had would have picked up on it earlier but was told not necessarily as one day readings can be normal for a while before anything is then seen. You just never know.

  • Well thank goodness they caught it early . Hopefully he will not have any after effects when his treatment is finished . Please wish you dad all the best and everything goes smoothly
