Advanced prostate cancer

I am 56 years old and I was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer in October 23.

Parents
  • I am stage 4 and a Gleason score of 9.

In February I was told I could have less than a12 month. I have a palliative treatment plan that includes Aberaterone and a month ago results showed that that the cancer was not showing signs of growth in all affected areas ie pelvis, hip, vertebrae, sternum and lymph nodes.

I am very grateful but am having trouble responding to the good news-I am at a loss as to why?

  • Hi Wildhog.  Back in November 2022 I was told that I had about a year to live........well, I am still here in may 2024.  I have been told the same as you, that the cancer is showing no signs of further growth.  Of course I am very grateful that I am still here, but I get days when I feel so depressed.  You are wondering why you are not happier?  I guess the answer is that you have been through an incredibly traumatic experience, and you are still going through it. This cancer journey (that NONE of us signed up for) takes an incredible toll on a person, not just physically, but emotionally and psychologically.  You have not been told that you are cured, only that the cancer is showing no signs of growth.  Which is exactly the same situation that I am in.  There isn't a 'right' way or a 'wrong' way to feel about any of this.  I get days when I feel very happy and full of hope, and then I get days when a huge black cloud seems to be hanging over my head.  Please don't feel guilty that you are not feeling as 'happy' as you should be, everything you feel is perfectly valid.  I wish you well, x
