24 & Possible Bowel Cancer. Want to feel less alone :(

Hi Everyone :)

I'm a 24 year old first-time-mum to my beautiful daughter who is 7 months old. Towards the end of my pregnancy, I began noticing blood in my stool. It wasn't every time I went to the loo so I just thought due to being so constipated I must've gotten some fissures. Fast forwards to last Friday (15th April) I went to the GP because the bleeding had gotten a lot worse and was no every single time I went to the loo. Did some stool samples and the results came up on Monday. My FIT result was <400 and I have been sent for an urgent referral as they're suspecting bowel cancer. I have a blood test tomorrow (Friday 19th April) and I'm just waiting to be contacted about this referral. GP said because of the amount of blood that there was they are more concerned than they usually would be for someone my age as it is more likely to be something nasty.

I am absolutely terrified. My fiance is too but he's really trying to put on a brave face for me I think. But my mind has just entered a downward spiral of feeling like I'm going to die and leave my fiance alone to raise our daughter. I've even gone as far as to start writing a Will out just incase so that everybody knows what items of mine they would be in charge of looking after.

Just want to be able to talk and openly share how I'm feeling with someone who isn't my family or work colleagues so I don't get treated differently because of what I'm going through.

  • Hi GothMamma.

I'm so sorry to hear about what you're going through. My husband is going through the same thing at the moment. He has been suffering from constipation for several weeks which is very unlike him, but he recently changed his anti depressants and constipation can be one of the side effects of the ones he is now taking. He had a rectal bleed on the 20th March and I immediately called and booked him in with our GP to get it checked. He told me not to bother because he had strained really badly the day before and it was probably due to that but I wasn't having any of it. He had a rectal examination at the doctors. She said that there was blood and he complained of tenderness when she pressed on one side but everything else seemed fine. She said that it was probably an anal fissure but ordered a FIT test. Results of that came back and he was told on 8th April that it was positive at 90, and that he was being urgently referred for a colonoscopy for suspected bowel cancer. We are absolutely mortified at the prospect of the big C. He seems to be just getting on with things, but I keep going to pieces about it. I'm so scared for him. I pray that he hasn't got cancer.

His colonoscopy is this Monday (22 April), so not long now until we have answers.

I really hope that everything turns out well for you. It's such a difficult time, and especially with a 7 month old baby too. Easier said than done, I know, but do try to remain positive. I'm sure that you will be around to make more wonderful memories with your fiancè and to watch your baby girl grow.

Keep us posted how you get on. Sending hugs and very best wishes to you.

  • Hi,

I got my blood results back and there are 3 which aren't normal and my GP has raised them as concerns. I have my telephone assessment on Thursday (25th April) to discuss all of my symptoms together and to work out a plan of action in terms of scans/examinations etc. Will keep updating as and when things happen. My fiance and I have been discussing what would happen if it was Cancer and how it would work if I had to go through Chemo or Operations in terms of who would go with me to hospital and who would have our daughter if he decided to come with me.

I know it's morbid and probably completely unneccessary at the moment but I have my Will written out and stored somewhere safe so that if the worst case scenario comes true then I know my family is going to be looked after and what I want till be put into place.

Thanks for taking the time to reply, keep us posted how things go for you :) x
