Vulva cancer - happy to help anyone on this journey

Hi.

5 years ago at 43 I was diagnosed with stage 3 vulval cancer.
My cancer was caused by a skin condition called Lichen Sclerosus of which I was misdiagnosed for 38 years. I have had 4 surgery's and radiotherapy twice and now am  4 years in remission so if I can help anyone with tips during treatment or just a chat then please message me.

I started raising awareness of both these rare conditions as they seem to get much less awareness and is often why we misdiagnosed or diagnosed  late as nurses are not trained in vulval conditions so are missed during vulval checks and smear tests.

It's hard enough getting a cancer diagnosis but one that's rare and embarrassing makes it a more lonely place.

  • Hello. I am waiting for a doctors appointment as I have noticed recently that I have been a bit itchy around around vulva and had a look this morning with a mirror and noticed a small open sore like hole at the entrance of my vagina and like a pale thickness on the right side of the opening of my vagina. When I see the doctor hopefully this week do you think they will refer me to a gynecologist? I'm really worried as I can't think what else is wrong with my vajayjay x

  • Could be a numbers of things causing the sore and itching like lichen sclerosus so glad you seeing your doctor, they should refer you and get a biopsy or my give you a steroid to see if improves both symptoms.
let me know how you get on

  • Hi

I'd be surprised if they didn't refer you on and maybe do a biopsy on the affected area. It could be Lichen Sclerosus so try not to automatically think the worst....although I know that's not easy. Are you up to date with your smear tests?

  • Hi Clare

I hope you will be able to give you some advice I had vulval cancer 6 yrs ago recovery was very good thank goodness.  Lately I am getting an awful burning sensation around the vulva area I have not had this for months but suddenly flared up again, I wonder have you any suggestions that I could try to alleviate this problem.

    thank you in anticipation

  • Hi Claire

Thank you for your post. I have just  been diagnosed with Vulval cancer (possibly stage 3). It is been so good to hear a positive story, so thank you. All of the stats and data I have read have been so gloomy and I feared the absolute worst case scenario. Vulval cancer is so rare and your post has given me a little glimmer of hope in what has been the worst week of my life.

  • Hi [@NessaF]‍

firstly ignore the stats and what you read online. Every cancer is different and the stats will look bad because VC is more common in those over 80 so many might not want any treatment or even die from something else so makes the stats seem bad.

once you get all the results and treatment plan you will feel better.  The first week is the worse as your mind goes everywhere and you think the worse.
join a support group as having others to chat to always helps.
happy to chat more to .

  • Hi Claire

Im becoming increasingly anxious waiting for biopsy results and thinking worst case scenario.

Please could you signpost me to support groups that might be helpful?

    many thanks

  • Hi Claire,

This is my first post, so thank you for your post it's given me the courage I needed. It is also good to read a clearly unique, however positive, post.

I was diagnosed with LS 11 years ago and diagnosed with stage 3 Vulvar Cancer Nov. 2023. I have had surgery and am currently having chemo and radiotherapy together. All are going well, not without side effects, but with support, I'm getting there.

It's every day so exhausted but staying positive helps me. I do really struggle with every bit of bad news as I'm so positive it feels like a new shock every time. I wonder if anyone else feels like this or has any tips on how to manage the balance of mind set but preparing yourself?

I also feel very passionate about raising awareness of both conditions. For a million reasons.

    Xxx
