Last stages of life

My Mum has lung cancer and was given just weeks to live a few months ago. She’s remarkably still here now, although it sucks that she’s suffering so much. Since December when she was at her worst she has improved slightly as in she has become slightly more mobile and is now on less oxygen but over the last week or so she’s been a lot more tired. I guess Ive been fearing the worse for months and every slight thing that gets worse I panic. What are the last stages of life? Will I know when the end is near? Thanks.

  • Hi,

I am so, so sorry to hear about your mum. I lost my mum, in 2015, to lung cancer and I know how it affects the whole family and so, I am thinking of you.

You will know when the time comes. I was only 17 when my mum passed away and had never seen anyone die before. I was there when she started to slip away and the thing that alerted me to call my dad was a change in how she was breathing. She started to take long, slow breathes and there were large pauses in between. However, leading up to this, she stopped eating and spent most of the days sleeping. Also, she began to sound raspy and like she was struggling to breathe. That is how we knew it wouldn't be long for her.

I am thinking of you and your family at this difficult time.

Message me if you ever need to talk.

    Hi Jess,

Thank you for your input. I am so sorry to hear that you lost your mum at such a young age. It must have been very difficult for you to witness all these changes as she slipped away. My heart goes out to you and your dad.

I hope that you are both coping with your loss.

    Kind regards,
