Dad Prostate Cancer spread to bones, what can I expect?

Hi.

I have been reading these posts for a while. My Dad, after undergoing tests has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, confirmed spread to pelvic bones. He is 71 and just came through a quadruple bypass! I am reliant on Dad and Mum for info, diagnosis and prognosis which is hard as they don't always fully understand all the information they are being given. Can anyone help me with what to expect? My Dad is my everything and I'm finding it all really difficult x

  • Hi it is possible he will be put in hormone therapy, remember im a cancer patient and not medically trained.

My prostate cancer has spread to lymph nodes spine ribs pelvis and a lung,I was diagnosed Feb 2016 been on hormone therapy since diagnosed, not always the same one, and I did have chemotherapy at the beginning.

I've had a few ups and downs over the years.still managing ok and looking after my wife, she has Alzheimer's and Parkinson's plus other problems.

Hope you can get more information soon.

  • Thank you so much for your reply. Wow, you must be strong in both body and mind! Yes I think they are planning injections and tablets first, maybe that is the hormone therapy. They have also mentioned chemotherapy after this but so far no timescales. I suppose I panicked a lot when I heard it had spread to his bones and hard not to think the worst (whilst hoping and praying for the best). I think I will also have to encourage my parents to ask questions to be clearer on what's happening/planned. Appreciate your time and wish you and your wife well.

  • Hi Jen, I'm sorry to hear of your dads diagnosis. My dad has also been diagnosed with prostate cancer which has spread into his pelvis. He was diagnosed 2 years ago and  we have been told it is treatable but not curable. He has hormone therapy (an implant every 3 months injected into his stomach). This has kept his PSA level very low, he had a PSA reading of 1500 at diagnosis but it's now 0.3. He has a blood test every 6 months to monitor this, eventually the PSA will start to rise but there are a lot of different hormone therapies that he can try if one stops working for him. My dad leads a fairly normal life, he is 75 and still gardening and playing golf. Unfortunately, the side effects of the hormone therapy get him down a bit. Mostly the weight gain and feeling more tired but as I say he has been able to carry on living a normal life. Please feel free to ask me anything.

  • Hi Ashley. Thank you so much for replying. Your situation sounds so similar. When the consultant spoke to my parents on the phone they said it was treatable but yes as you said not curable, so from that I wasn't sure what to expect. Encouraging that your Dad doing well 2 years later, my Dad also a keen gardener. I don't know anything about his PSA levels so I must try and find out from my parents if they know this information or get them to ask. They often find the medical information difficult to understand. Wishing you and your Dad well.

  • Thank you for this. I must try and find out this information in relation to my Dad. I think it was a shock as all happened very quickly. I like your attitude and the uninvited guest, so I think some we all need time to adjust to this new way of life but this chat has really helped.

  • Other information you want is stage 1to 4 , .Gleason its two numbers added together like 3+3=6 upto 5+5=10 max score,, . mine was stage 4.  , Gleason 8 also some letters with numbers letters are  T. N. B.  Are main ones depending on cancer numbers after letters and possible A or B after numbers sorry if its confusing, after tests your father should get a letter with test results which should make things easier.

    Hope things go smoothly.

    Best wishes for the future.

    Billy.
