Finding it hard - BC diagnosis

Was diagnosed with DCIS last year and was totally positive, had my treatment and am now cured.

I've posted on the forum regularly in support of many and hope my words have been encouraging to those I've replied to.

Now only 12 months later my daughter has been diagnosed  with invasive ductal carcinoma and I'm finding it hard. Hopefully caught really early as she had herself checked after I was diagnosed and was clear. She has a CT scan tomorrow (is this usual?) and her lumpectomy is scheduled for the 15th. Other than that we don't know her treatment plan yet. Don't know any stages or other info yet.

I'm finding it harder to deal with than my own. As a parent you just want to protect your children and I'd take the hit first over my kids any day. She's only 42 with 2 young boys.

My hubby's taken it really hard

She lives away from me and I think I'll feel better when I see her (next week)

I know I'll get support on here and hopefully Chrissie, Marlyn, Beachebabe, Jolamine will chip in and make me  feel a whole lot better with their wise words

Thanks in advance - Irene x

  • Hi Marlyn

Do you mind me asking your treatment plan and when you found out what it was?

My daughter still doesn't know anything other than the lumpectomy. Did you find out staging and plan before your op or after?

She sees the surgeon tomorrow - Thanks - Irene x

  • Hi Irene

my treatment plan was swift, I got my diagnosis on the 17 th Dec, where I found out it was invasive ductal carcinoma grade 2 ....it wasn't until 2 weeks after the lumpectomy on the 3 rd jan when I found out all the other little titbits ( sorry) it was also mucinous and they wanted to retest the her2 status....mine changed from neg to pos ( it would) ! So that was the game changer...started chemo Feb 14 th...so as you can see very swift....I also had clear margins and no lymph node involvement...which gave me a false sense of security!

I wish your daughter luck tomorrow and will be looking out for you xxxxx

  • Thanks Marlyn. I was thinking it would be after the op. I'm really hoping she doesn't need chemo. Think I would have struggled with that.

You're amazingly upbeat considering what you're going through. How has it made you feel and has it affected your hair? Will you need radiotherapy as well?

    Irene x

  • My first cycle was brutal, I ended up in hospital the following day with uncontrollable vomiting, I was all for throwing the towel in...but my onco reassured me he could wiggle things around and thank god he did...this cycle has been much kinder...

my hair fell out shortly after first cycle, I decided not to cold cap as I don't want to be in the chemo unit any longer than I need to be, I also watched Victoria Derbyshire YouTube blog on her chemo journey....

after chemo its rads and herceptin followed by anastrozole...so a long haul ahead...

here any time for you and you lovely daughter xxxxx

  • Thank you Marlyn and for your honesty. I really admire that you're able to help with your invaluable advice.

I need to take off my rose tinted glasses that she will get through this as straightforward as I did.

I'll prepare myself for the worst case treatment plan and anything less will be a bonus.

Thank you for your help and support - Irene x
