Worried Husband

Hi All

My wife has been undergoing chemotherapy since November - she’s had 5 cycles and she had no side effects at all after any of them.

Its been 3 weeks since her last session and in the past few days she’s been totally exhausted. Has no energy to do anything and could easily sleep all day. I’m finding it hard to get her to eat or drink.

She was due her 6th cycle a week ago but the blood results were not good enough although she’s had another test on Thursday and they’ve improved enough for her to have her chemo on Monday.

From your experiences is this normal so long after the start of treatment? I understand the chemotherapy has a cumulative effect on the body but doesn’t stop me worrying.

  • Hi sorry can't help you much but if your wife's not drinking enough water fluids and she is dehydrated it really is so important simple dehydration can cause that I cannot stress the need for hydration .there's two helplines one McMillan and Marie curie the numbers are free if you ring them they have advisers and nurses you can speak to one to one cancer and all the treatment is so confusing so sometimes the simplest of things like hydration can get overlooked and I was told that cancer patients need more because the oncologist told me chemo and cancer makes your blood sticky those drink bottals with flip up spouts are good so they can have sips .weras sometime if you have a big glass of water in front of you it can put you off plus chemo can effect taste hope your wife picks up best wishes .paul ps you can get fortisip hi calorie drinks but also you can get fortijuice drinks much thiner and easier to cope with not as heavy or sickly but same calorific value

  • Hi, I have been through this with my husband and yes it can be an accumulation of chemo.  Getting good food with iron in it and lots of fluids is essential.  Mine had anaemia and was taken in for a blood transfusion during treatment, so get that checked.  I know she's going to say she's not hungry but you have to be strong and force her to eat.  Buy food she likes, little and often is the way forward.  Mine now needs to go on a diet and when I look back at how he was its amazing.  So be a nag for a change and tell her it's for all of you that she needs to get better. Good luck, Carol

  • Hello, firstly well done to your wife for getting through all the chemo, I am gearing up for my second cycle of fec Thursday and I seem to have had all the side effects going...including crushing fatigue, I could honestly fall asleep on a clothesline! But I am eating and drinking at least 2 litres of water everyday, when I really don't want to eat I can manage grapes and arrow root biscuits.....is your wife loosing weight? Cheesy mash is also a winner for me.....

I am in awe that she hasn't had the side effects except the fatigue......she's my hero! Xxx
