Feeling sad and don't know who to talk to

So my dad was diagnosed with lung cancer about 6 weeks ago. We have now found out that it is small cell and realistically he only has about a year left. I spoke to him today and he said he had a really good day. He slept and had eaten. Now while I'm great full he's had a good day i just can't get my head around the fact that even with a good day it doesn't change the diagnosis. How do people cope knowing that they are going to lose someone they love so much

  • Hi Sami

Welcome to the forum and I  know from past experience that coming to terms with a loved one's cancer diagnosis feels very scary. Like Brian I can honestly say I am not sure where the inner strength comes from but we do somehow manage to cope.  I lost my dad more than eight years ago now and then my husband in Jan this year and both wanted day to day life to be kept as normal as possible for as long as we could. Yes, I worried as how I would cope but with the help of friends and family  during my Dad's illness (prostate/lung cancer) and with the added support of this great forum during my husband three year journey with cancer of the lung linings (Mesothelioma), I found coping day to day and enjoying 'the moment' was important and listening to what our loved ones wanted helped me understand.  Timelines are only a guide. Do come and chat here anytime you think it will help as sometimes just sharing with those who have understanding can be a great support in itself.  Wishing  you, your Dad and the family all the best.
