Tonsil Cancer

For anyone who is about to start their cancer treatment for Tonsil Cancer I would like them to know about my partners journey so far to give some positive vibes. He is almost finished Chemo and Radiotherapy the side effects that he was told would happen haven't been as bad as expected. He has managed without needing a PEG or NG tube. Food has been difficult but has found the drink supplements a big help in keeping calories up when everything has started to taste horrible. His throat has been sore but with soluble paracetamol and co - codamol it's been manageable. Im not saying it's easy but doing the exercises the speech therapist gave him weeks before treatment started really helped. As the weeks went on from 4th week he was only able to do them once a day. Taste is the worst of it all but that should improve once treatment stops. I know each person will respond differently to treatment but I just wanted anyone out there who is starting all this to have some hope.

  • Thank you so much for this post.  My husband is just about to start the same regime.  We have a week to go before the journey begins.  You have posted some invaluable advice and yes, you have instilled a bit of hope in us. He is doing his exercises given by Speech Therapist so, it is good to know that it works.  Many thanks for the tips.

  • Hi I hope all goes well for him. It's now nearly 4 months since treatment finished for my husband and has had 2 reviews which shows the tumour has gone. Recovery has been really good. He has some lymphoedema in his neck which goes down after exercise. We were not aware of this happening but don't worry about that you have enough to think about. His taste is not back just gets bit sometimes but this can take months. On the whole he looks fit and well in quite a short time. The exercises really helped but did find it difficult to keep it up when he felt sick with the chemo but doing it for weeks before was definitely helpful. Keeping the neck moisturised during radiotherapy keeps skin in good condition. Reach out anytime if you want to chat. Wishing you all the best through this awful time. X

  • I'm fairly optimistic - and very practical - when viewing his upcoming treatment. (Ex Staff Nurse & Midwife) So, I am lucky that the "medical" side of things doesn't distress me.  A bonus, I think.  I bought some Moo Goo cream to help with his skin.  He is also lucky in that his sister is a retired dietician and has given us loads of tips. She is always on hand for support.  It is good to hear of a positive outcome so thank you for taking the time to reply.  He has only 2 chemos booked - Day 1 and Day 22.  The usual radiotherapy regime: Mon - Fri for a 6 weeks.  We shall see how we go - nothing else for it except .. Get on with it! xx
