Tonsil Cancer

For anyone who is about to start their cancer treatment for Tonsil Cancer I would like them to know about my partners journey so far to give some positive vibes. He is almost finished Chemo and Radiotherapy the side effects that he was told would happen haven't been as bad as expected. He has managed without needing a PEG or NG tube. Food has been difficult but has found the drink supplements a big help in keeping calories up when everything has started to taste horrible. His throat has been sore but with soluble paracetamol and co - codamol it's been manageable. Im not saying it's easy but doing the exercises the speech therapist gave him weeks before treatment started really helped. As the weeks went on from 4th week he was only able to do them once a day. Taste is the worst of it all but that should improve once treatment stops. I know each person will respond differently to treatment but I just wanted anyone out there who is starting all this to have some hope.

  • Hello DebsyJ,

Thank you so much for coming here and sharing with us your partner's tonsil cancer journey. I am sure it will be really helpful for others who have also had a tonsil cancer diagnosis so thank you your message will no doubt give hope to many who are embarking on the same journey. I will certainly make sure to signpost our members who have been diagnosed with tonsil cancer to your thread so that they can find inspiration in reading your story.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi

    How many rt and chemo

hiwsvthe dry mouth ulcers they say we might get

    sickness

  • Hi 30 radiotherapy sessions which has only 2 left and 6 Chemo that has finished. The dry mouth has not been a big problem yes it has happened but not needing really needing to be sipping drinks that much more than normal. Sore mouth but the mouth washes and moisturising gel that has been given has helped a lot. I think the worst thing has been feeling sick from Chemo. This seems to happen around day 5 post chemo but they have switched meds around to help him which has made some difference. I think also the altered taste so he has to make himself eat and drink. His swallowing has not been affected. All these things have been manageable and no where near as bad as we were expecting. I have to add everyone will experience different problems I just wanted people to know going into this what we have seen happen for my husband. I wish you all the best and hope you will of got some positive from what I have posted.

  • The macmillan team are really good there is always a number you can ring anytime and also hopefully like my husband you will get a weekly review with a practitioner, dietician and speech therapist. Just remember you are not alone there is a team of people there to help and give you reassurance. The help and advice  you will get will soon calm your fears. Whatever you are feeling they will be of come across every anxiety there is they are very experienced and very caring. You won't feel alone honest.

  • Yes HPV positive which is good news it responds well to treatment and they told us curable.
