Hi, my mum was diagnosed with Squamous Cell Throat Cancer in Feb. There have been some setbacks along the way which has prolonged a treatment plan being put into place.
She hasn't eaten or drank since January and had NG tube fitted which then had to be replaced with a PEG as the NG wasn't tolerable. She swills her mouth but can't swallow so that's about as far as it goes.
She was also recovering from an infection so that put the treatment back even further. They initially said radiation & chemo but now it's just immunotherapy (permbrolizumab). This is due to start on Monday & will take place every 3 weeks for up to 2 years.
My mum is struggling to see a way out of this, she's also had to have a tracheostomy fitted as it was discovered that the tumour is making its way down her airway.
Does anyone have any positive stories re this type of cancer or treatment & can life return back to normal? Will the immunotherapy shrink the tumour as I'm confused as to how she's ever going to be able to eat or drink again & feeling so helpless.
