Delirium with UTI

My father is nearing end of life with recurrent bowel cancer spread to bladder. He is on antibiotics for consistent UTI's. UTI causes him to have complete delirium. When he is free of infection he remains asleep in bed. With UTI he wakes all night to use bathroom but keeps finding strength to jump out of bed. He manages a few steps then falls and I have to try and carry him back to bed. What can I do? I have a baby monitor on that is motion sensitive so every time he moves it alerts me. I go running in and remind him to stay in bed and use the pants he is wearing. But I am up about three times an hour all through the night. Due to Covid we have no package of care arranged due to staff shortages. How can I kindly keep him in bed? Are there sleeping tablets or something for the night or is that even more of a fall risk? I can't do all nighters indefinitely as I have a 5 year old. What do people do in this situation?

  • Hi i was in similar position to you other year with my darling wife , she is completely incontinent because of Tia's (mini stroke ,) we got hospital bed with side rails, single size one .  but she climbed over it and fel further to the floor luckily didn't break anything but plenty of bruises .I tried camp bed beside her for me but she got nasty about it she's got Parkinson's and Alzheimer's plus other problems .I have baby monitor good idea , and commode right beside bed so she can use it for support and toilet rather than walk any distance although she has a walker nearby just incase. tried thin mattress on floor and waterproof sheets on bed and mattress just incase.i let her sleep with nothing on below waist let things dry and breathe rather than keep covered up 24/7 , she has less uti's this way, and always has a regular shower or wash down below uses femfresh soap, don't know if possible for men or just mild jel  . don't know if I've helped you but hope I've given you ideas .

  • PLEASE start your wife on Waterfall D Mannose -

this works a miracle on UTI's !!!!!!   No more antibiotics, give it a chance and follow the instructions.  The company is called Sweet Cures - they are amazingly helpful.

you can Google this- I promise you it will work but only if it is E- coli.
    good luck and warm regards.

  • Thanks for the info I'll definitely have a good look at what you said about treatment.           THANK YOU

    Billy

  • Billy, the GP's mostly know about D Mannose.  The Sweet Cures website is very very explanatory, it saved me from antibiotics the rest of my life as the infection never really clears up with antibiotics.

but as I said, it only is effective if the bacteria is E Coli ( which is most likely) and I hope the hospital laboratory has tested for E. coli.

goid luck, would love to know how your wife gets on with it. Can buy online if chemist doesn't stock it.  Please don't use any other D Mannose on sale, they don't work......

PS. GP's don't prescribe it as it's too expensive £23 per box

  • Apologies I meant these messages to Sarah.  It does work for men.

  • Hi everyone,

Scientific evidence does not indicate that D-Mannose can cure a UTI. The evidence only shows that D-Mannose appears to help prevent recurrent UTI.

D-Mannose supplements should be used with caution if you have diabetes. It may make it harder to control your blood sugar and high doses of D-Mannose may cause kidney damage.

We always recommend telling your doctor about any supplements you are taking, including natural ones and those bought without a prescription.

If any of you would like to discuss this further with one of our cancer nurses, they're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

    Kind regards,

  • Yes Thankyou moderator, agreed.  This is stated on Sweet Cures scientific section of their website- worth a browse.

the purest form of D Mannose is Waterfall.  I was on antibiotics for 2 years, with repeated infection and eventually a resistance to the antibiotics which stopped working.  D mannose save all of that and I now use a small amount nightly.  No problem ms any more whatsoever.

when the hospital lab report came back saying there was no evidence of E. coli or anything else I was still in pain.  Their reports don't go far enough so I sent a urine sample to a private clinic in the North of England which came back with a totally different report. Anyway just to say here that it's well worth looking into. I recommended it to my elderly neighbour who was suffering for years on and off antibiotics and she hugged me in delight when all that stopped and she now has had no further UTI's for over one year!
