Should it be me?

Hi all,

I was recently diagnosed with right breast IDC Grade 3 (aggressive). 1st Dec, I was told I need a second biopsy to find the nature of a small lesion which was hidden behind a 4cm tumor. My breast surgeon requested it as urgent and told me he would see me very soon for results where they would know the type, stage and what treatment to deal with it.

I received a letter telling me to come to the breast clinic 22nd Dec. I thought this date was very far away for a 2nd biopsy procedure, but I was just glad things are moving. Since my diagnosis, I have experienced sharp stabbing like pains in the tumor area. I called my breast specialist today, who is absolutely brilliant!!!, just for advice. She was under the impression that a week had gone by and i'd already had my 2nd biopsy so, could I give radiology a call, mention its urgency and ask if I could have a date for a follow up biopsy as  22nd Dec is the date I go back to clinic for results.

I did as I was asked, to be told they are aware because it is on my notes as urgent, but there are no availble appointments (no matter how urgent!)

Im obviously not going to refuse as I dont want to delay my treatment any further, but my question is....should it be me chasing the hospital for appointments? Is it my responsibility? But if I hadnt called today, my specialist would not have known and would have assumed Id already had the biopsy done, so she was glad I called on the off chance.

I have 15 days to 'play' with. Do I keep my 22nd Dec appointment? There will be no results to give. It takes around 2 weeks for results after the procedure.....but need procedure first!!!!

Im not comfortable with all this especially since the word breast cancer and aggressive were used in the same sentence!

What do you think?

Would appreciate anyone experiencing the same setback or just some general advice.

Much love xx

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

I am sorry to learn about your recent diagnosis and that you are waiting for a second biopsy. I can appreciate that this is a stressful situation to be in.

In an ideal world patients shouldn't have to have to chase up their appointments, and I am not sure if it is really fair to ask you, but it is probably a reflection of the pressure that the NHS is under just now.  I think you need to get back to your breast specialist, let them know what you were told when you called radiology, ask if this matters and what you should do about the appointment the week after next.

Waiting is seldom easy and I can understand anyone in this position feeling uneasy. I think the best course of action at the moment is to talk to the breast specialist and get their input.

If you want to give us a ring to talk anything over please do, our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are around weekdays 9-5.

    Best wishes,

    Julia

  • Hi Julia,

I got in contact my breast specialist again and was told they would give radiology a 'gentle nudge', and it wouldn't do any harm for me to do so as well. They also said radiology may give me a call within 2 days (including today), and I would still have my results by the consultants appointment.

Anytime after these 2 days, I shouldn't come to clinic, and another appointment would be made.

My mind is at rest that they haven't forgotten me and have faith they will be in touch as soon as they possibly can.

    Thanks Julia x

  • Hey Mickey,

    Happy Sunday to you too:laugh:

    You truly are inspirational!

Here I am, going into a paranoid meltdown, and along you come like a breeze on a very hot summer day, to cool things down (just when its needed).

For most of the time I am a strong minded person and nothing phases me. I have been good, laughing, joking and getting on with general things, including preps for Christmas, but suddenly all these questions came to mind, which needed some kind of clarity in any form, but I couldn't find them on the forum. I know I probably sound juvenile instead of a married adult with 5 (yes!! 5) beautiful daughters, and although they are supportive, they are extremely emotional about the whole situation. This resolutes in me being emotional, which only brings sadness over a delicate area that Im trying to control.

I was told by my sister only yesterday, that if anyone spoke to me over the phone/face to face, would never  believe I was 'sick'. I quickly corrected her by saying I wasn't sick, but I was a little broken and would soon be fixed.

Your words are soothing and beyond kindness. I hope to share our journey and comparisons (if any) together. I believe everyone needs a Mickey they can call on.

  • Btw,

I remember your surgery is scheduled for 14th Dec.

I bet the day can't come quick enough to rid yourself of what I would call, a very unwanted guest!

I want to say although I know it seems like l'm so wrapped up with my demons, I haven't forgotten that you're going through it all as well.

You are in my thoughts and prayers.

  • Thank you, I'm trying to pack my suitcase to be brought into hospital on Day 2. I know I'll have so much on tomorrow (including a blue boob and urine) that if I don't do it now, I'll forget something very important. I go in to admissions in dressing gown and slippers, lol - she told me I could take pants if I wanted and later put them in my dressing gown pocket xx

Thanks for the lovely messages and happy to stay in touch - really glad it's helping you. Wow 5 daughters, lots of emotion and hormones going on for you x

love n hugs Mickey xx ️

  • Hello I.Love.life and I am sorry to hear that you are waiting for another biopsy to be done.

While I know it must be worrying do remember that even if it is getting bigger this still does not mean the cancer will spread and that your situation or outlook will change.  I also think when anyone are worried it could be all too easy to see the situation is worse when actually it isn't.

CT scans and MRI's are usually done in early stage breast cancer for different reasons. For example they may be carried out if there is a concern that the cancer could have spread.  This concern might be because the patient has particular symptoms that might be caused by cancer being in another part of the body or if cancer was found in the lymph nodes.

I hope next week goes well and that you will be okay. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline

  • Hi Mickey,

I don't expect you will see this post until you feel up to reading and replying, but all the best for your op.

  • Hi Positive Polly,

I did see your message before I left yesterday - thabk you for thinking of me, that's so kind.

cant type much (sore arms)  so have 'cut and paste' sane jessagevto others.

I was first in at 7 and had my Anaesthetic by 8 and so must have done op in less than 10

    Hours .

I’ve tried to rest my eyes for ten mins in between my half hourly reconstructed Boobie checks (blood vessels are still working), blood pressure, temperature and finger Clip, which I guess is heart rate.

I came round from anaesthetic really quickly, 6.40 I think I saw on clock when I first looked after coming round. They say most people don’t come round til after 9. Had a sore throat and croaky voice, but ok now.

I had very little pain for ages, but now I have a little bit and on stupid skin reactions, worst one under left arm, so thank god I bought a little beanbag type red heart, stops my Skin rubbing. I’m on morphine, so all ok xxx

Cafetter bag was a gorgeous Sea green at first, I’ve drunk lots of water (as directed) and so it’s lighter green now.

Blood pressure has been a little low and so checked more often and more water I was told to drink.

My DVT socks are green with toes and I have contracting something on both one after the other  xx

Im ok, just very tired .

  • Home today Positive Polly - how are you doing? Xx ️

  • Hi Mickey x

Im good, plodding on, getting to grips with all that comes with Christmas.

Great news you're back home. How are you doing? Understanding you have pain at present, but managable pain I hope.

No doubt a lot of energy was used up going to apts, waiting time and surgery, so take this time to relax and recuperate some of that lost energy, to be ready for the next stage when it comes. (Hark at me! It was you who gave me the strength to keep going - now it's me telling you to be strong) That's the effect your kind advice had on me and I'm sure many others can echo my words too!

    Rest well angel

  • Hello Positive Polly,

I love that you are wrapping yourself up in Christmas, great way to get through to next weeks apt.

Im doing really well, thank you. I was worried about the stairs and getting in and out of bed, but it's been absolutely ok. The only real pain is my back, guess from positions I was put in during surgery. I'll start the official exercises tomorrow and hope they will help too (must force myself to do them).

My hubby says I look so much brighter like the stress of the journey has suddenly lifted now. I know it's not necessarily the end of my treatment, but thank god the cancer has gone and my face shows it - seriously.

Thank you for your caring kindness and giving me strength to get to this point.

Just remember if I can do this, you can do whatever your treatment entails too and you will. I'll be here for you Xx

Love n massive hugs Mickey xx ️

  • Hi Positive Polly,

Not sure what time your hospital apt is for the biopsies tomorrow and so I'm sending you all my positivity, love and hugs to you.

Your angel will be watching over you.

Try again: Sending a virtual hug and hope you're ok and resting up now xx ️

  • How are you doing Positive Polly ? I hope you feel ok after your latest biopsies.

Happy Boxing Day - love n hugs Mickey xx ️

  • Hi Mickey,

    Happy Boxing Day my friend,

I as well as can be expected. Second biopsy was uncertain, as the lump to be biopsied, could'nt be found. (It can be clearly seen in the initial mammogram). I had an ultasound and 3D imaging, checking all areas of the breast, including my armpit, and the pathologist still could'nt see it, but he went ahead using the initial mammogram as a guide and placed a marker in where he thought it was. Before leaving, I had a mammogram.

I just have to wait for the results on 14th Jan, but results for what? If the lump can't be found, where is it? What did I have a biopsy of?

Anyway, how are you 11 days post op? I'd like to know all if you don't sharing? Overall, I hope your Christmas went well. Mine was good. I took hours to prepare dinner, and it seemed like it took just minutes for my lot to devour it. I've been doing this for years and it STILL amazes me!!

Take care Mickey, hope to catch up soon

Seasons Greetings from our house to your house

    Much love xx

  • Morning Positive Polly ,

If you click on my username MickeyM and then click on the discussions heading, you will see a thread called lumps and microcalcifications - pre-diagnosis HELP.  That's the thread I have used since I was awaiting results from first set of biopsies back in September and I still chat to Jolamine on that thread to provide updates, so you'll probably get the most useful updates if you want to read or follow that thread.

I update this site from my phone and for some reason, I struggle to cut and paste on this site.  My arms are doing much better than expected, but they do get a bit tired after texting etc..

In short, I'm really pleased with my progress, two weeks tomorrow post op and I'm starting to feel a bit like myself again. I have to remind myself that I can't lift etc, or I'd forget because my arm movement is much better than I had anticipated.  The first few days were definitely the toughest, I was afraid once they took the caffeter out to go to the loo and my back hurt so much, I found it hard to stand straight or lie without a Lot of pain. The back pain is unusual though and I think that's because I have an overarched spine that will never push into the ground (I've always had to do different exercises, i.e. sit-ups because of it) and so I think my back was in an awkward position in surgery. It's been much better the last few days though. I think the exercises, some stretching I've done myself and practising standing up straight and walking have all helped, along with the fact that I can now sleep a bit on both of my sides, which takes the pressure off my back.

How did they try to do the actual second biopsy (ultrasound)? Did you see the ultrasound and 3D imaging yourself?  That's really bizarre that he couldn't find it and so I'm hoping that he put the marker in the right place and that the mammogram found it again - fingers crossed . How frustrating for you, my friend. I'm hopeful the mammogram will save the day and they will be able to find a way forward. I can't remember why they didn't put a marker in initially when they found the lump on the mammogram? ?

I expect my results will be around the same time as yours, but I haven't heard anything yet.

Im glad you had a good Christmas and yes, I know what you mean - all that prep and gone so quickly, but I always take pleasure in seeing empty plates .

We're getting a lot of rain, which limits my ability to walk  outside, I wouldn't normally care about the rain at all, but currently getting drenched would probably not aid my recovery and so I'm trying to avoid going out in heavy rain.  Still I managed to walk 3.5 Km yesterday and so I'm really pleased with that.

Have a good day my friend.

Love and hugs Mickey xx ️
