Newbe

Hi

had a reasonably high PSA, after developing PMR, over a year ago which came down to normal a year or so later. Was referred to urologist had MRI and told I possibly had a 'flare up'. Now PSA test every 6 mns, is this the norm does anyone know, needless to say it has taken over my life some what at present awaiting a result.

  • It's what is called watch and wait .  Quite a few people are on it .its when no treatment neaded now but might need some in the future hence 6 monthly check.

Hope that helps you, I've flagged [@telemando]‍  he probably can explain it better than me. Please don't worry it a normal thing.

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

I am sorry to hear about your situation. I can understand that having a regular test hanging over you can be unsettling.

It does sound like your PMR (Polymyalgia rheumatica) was the cause of the rise in your PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen). By the sounds of it, your urologist was able to rule out any problems with your prostate from the results of your MRI scan. The PSA test is never used as a stand alone test and if it is raised other tests are usually done to help diagnose someone.

It does sound like your PSA result has now returned to a normal level.

You can read more about the PSA test here

As you did have a raised PSA result your doctor has recommended that you have regular blood tests just to keep an 'eye ' on it. If you have any urinary symptoms before the six months then do get in touch with your GP and so they can do a PSA  earlier. The NHS have written some warning signs that it helps to be aware of which you can see here

Active surveillance and watchful waiting is used when prostate cancer is actually diagnosed so this will probably not apply to you as mentioned by Billiegoat.

You can look at the information on our website about this here

If this is something that is continuing to cause you some concern then do discuss this with your GP as they have more information about your medical history.

I do hope this has been helpful. You are more then welcome to give us a ring or get back to us if you want to discuss any of this.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best Wishes,

    Catherine

  • Hi Catherine

many thanks for your informative reply.

I have just got the results back and it has raised a little (3.2 - 4.5), but when I had PMR it went up to 5.8  but dropped down to 2.8 after 6 mns (hence the urologist and mri 17 months ago)

My father had BPH as has my older brother, so hoping that's what I have inherited, I seem to have the classic symptoms according to Dr Google.

I am having a telephone consultation with my GP tomorrow.

I am a worrier, just trying to get my head around what I'm dealing with!

    thanks again
